Our "BIG IDEAS" this week in French class:
*bonhomme de neige (snowman): new song!
*New vocabulary: "J'aime..." (I like...)
*letter Gg: pronounced "zheh" - similar to the g in 'massage'. Action: move finger in a circle like water going down the drain
* 3D solids: vocabulary, attributes, movement
*making predictions!: stories, experimenting with snow
Learning through play this week:
ART: tissue paper mittens
MATH - 3D solids: sorting by movement
MATH - subitizing number puzzles
LOOSE PARTS: make a snowman, make a gingerbread man
STEM - building with Lincoln logs and small world people. Can you make a village?
LITERACY: winter write the room
DRAMATIC PLAY - veterinarian's office
Prepositions are words that tell us where something is.
Children need to understand these words so they can carry out instructions independently.
We played a variety of positional language games using this song to recall the prepositions.
In French, the letter Mm is pronounced the same in French and English.
The gesture is to rub your tummy in a circle like you just ate something yummy.
In French, the letter Dd is pronounced “day”.
The gesture is to use your pointer and middle finger like legs and walk them down imaginary stairs.
We are continuing to explore 3D solids, their solid names, attributes and movement.
Here are the solids that we are learning about:
sphère
cône
prisme
cube
cylindre
Here are the attributes that were introduced this week:
sommet (vertex)
arête (edge)
face (face)
Movement of 3D solids:
rouler (roll)
glisser (slide)
empiler (stack)
Before reading the story 'La vie secrete des bonhommes de neige' we made predictions about what we thought the story would be about.
After reading the story we created our very own snowmen. What are the steps to make a snowman? What should we start with?
In French, the letter Rr is pronounced "err".
The gesture is to claw at the air like a lion and make the letter Rr sound as you growl like a lion.
After reviewing the colours in French, we created our own indoor fire works! Milk Fireworks!
Just like scientists, we made predictions and had a discussion about what we observed.
Feel free to do the experiment with a family member or friend! If you ever forget what a colour is in French, don't forget to sing our colour song (to the tune of Frere Jacques):
Bleu Jaune Rouge (Blue Red Yellow)
Bleu Jaune Rouge
Orange et vert (Orange and Green)
Orange et vert
Rose et Brun et Violet (Pink & Brown & Purple)
Rose et Brun et Violet
Noir Blanc Gris (Black White Gray)
Noir Blanc Gris
We are learning about the the different types of 3D solids, and their attributes.
What is a 3D solid? What are some 3D solids you know?
sommet (vertex)
arête (edge)
face (face)
Sequencing is an important readiness skill that provides a foundation for both reading development and scientific inquiry. This concept helps children learn to recognize patterns that make their world more understandable and predictable.
Can you recall the events of the story
"La Moufle" in order?
Many animals prepare for the winter differently. Some go through changes and adapt to the white snow and cold weather, like a rabbit changing it's fur coat to white to hide from predators. Some animals migrate to warmer climates, like butterflies and Canada Geese. Other animals find special habitats to hibernate, and sleep throughout the winter season until Spring arrives.
Do you know which animals hibernate?
Quels animaux hibernent?
