We learned about measuring weight, and we introduced the terms "weight, mass, light, heavy and equal". We had rudimentary scales, and the students explored to see how different items compared. We also saw what items were equal weight.
We used sugar cubes to make these little structures!
In our Dramatic Play area, students wrote letters to each other and mailed them.
Some students occasionally request a drawing tutorial video. Here the students are drawing Charizard from Pokemon.
We traced and measured our feet with pop tabs.
We like to play the game "Garbage Ball".
Ms Risa decided to bring in supplies and lead an activity on making "slime" for the students to bring home! Thank you Ms Risa!!
So apparently Rainbow Loom is back in style! :D Ms Risa taught three students who in turn have been teaching others. We're happy to accommodate their interest as this is great fine motor practice and creativity!
This fine motor practice with elastics is how the kids discovered their new interest. The spiked balls quickly went by the wayside when they realized they could make bracelets! :)
100s Day is a great opportunity to start building students' concept of what 100 is. We counted 100 items of different sorts, and we also grouped by tens in our circle time, and tried counting by tens. Our activities gave students further opportunities to explore.
We read I Am Love, by Susan Verde. We talked about what kindness, compassion and tenderness is, and what this looks like in our class. We will continue this conversation.
This week in our Makerspace, students were challenged to create their own "Diggersaurus" machine, inspired by the book of the same name.
Thank you for donating loose parts and materials, please continue doing so!
On monday we started discussing Groundhog Day. Several students remembered that a hole was in the ground in the nature centre in the fall. They worked hard to remember where it was and dig it out in case there was a groundhog living there!
We watched the live stream of Wiarton Willie on Wednesday together and are looking forward to an early spring! ;)
We also had a mini discussion about if it was possible for groundhogs to predict the weather or speak to people, and we thought a little bit about why the video said that the groundhog could talk. (It was a mini conversation about media literacy)
We began to consider distance this week. We took footsteps from a chair to the door and counted. We saw that each student had a different number of footsteps. This activity was an introduction to the concept of needing a consistent "unit" when measuring and when comparing two distances.
