Northern Kentucky Health Department's (NKY Health's) policy is to encourage and support equal employment opportunity for all employees and applicants for employment without regard to age (40 or over), HIV/AIDS status, race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, childbirth, pregnancy/childbirth related medical conditions, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, family status, smoker status, genetic information, ethnic hair styles or any other legally protected classification except where a bona fide occupational qualification applies.  Employment decisions are evaluated on the basis of an individual’s skills, knowledge, abilities, job performance, and other legitimate qualifications.

As part of our commitment to both good government and equitable treatment of all NKY Health employees and applicants seeking employment with us,  NKY Health places equal employment opportunity and diversity among the highest priorities and ensures that all applicants and employees are afforded equal opportunities pertaining to recruiting, hiring, transfer, promotion, training, compensation, benefits, seniority, termination of employment and opportunities for professional growth within the health department.

Harassment of any kind, including sexual harassment, is strictly prohibited.  Complaints of harassment are investigated rapidly and thoroughly and employees who are found to have behaved in such a way are disciplined, up to possible dismissal from employment.  Harassment is considered a serious behavior problem and is not tolerated at NKY Health.  If you have a complaint of harassment, you may see your immediate supervisor, or any management individual, including our head of Human Resources or myself.  You can be assured that we will do all we can to maintain confidentiality while an investigation will be conducted.  Retaliation for filing a complaint of discrimination (of any kind) is not permitted and is not tolerated.

Moreover, NKY Health recognizes that continued success in meeting the needs of our clients and customers, both internal and external, requires the full and active participation of talented and committed individuals. By fostering an atmosphere of acceptance and support, we value and appreciate the strengths afforded by the differences, styles, ideas and organizational contributions of each and every person.

Diversity complements the other organizational values of integrity, inclusivity, innovation, and impact and it encompasses the way we work, the work environment, and respect for people and ideas. While its major focus may often revolve around issues of previous discrimination based on race and gender, Diversity is not something that is defined or limited solely by those two factors. It includes everyone and everything,  extends to personal and work history, education, function, personality, geographic origin, tenure with the organization, merit and non-merit status, and management or non-management position, and encompasses varying management styles and ways of thinking, leadership abilities, skill levels, experiences, viewpoints, expression of thoughts and differing ways of delivering services provided there is consistency in the values we share.  Diversity is inclusion. It stresses equal opportunity and recognizes and respects the multitude of differences that employees bring to the workplace as well as acknowledging the changing “face” of the community we serve.  Therefore, NKY Health will always strive to optomize its ability to recruit, retain, and tap the full potential of employees at all levels, be reflective of the population and socioeconomic circumstances of the public we serve, and eliminate all biases in the workforce.

(Refer to our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policy for details.)

Equal opportunity and diversity must be part of the fabric of all personnel decisions at NKY Health.  I am responsible for ensuring that this happens.  However, the full cooperation and affirmation of embracing diversity by all NKY Health staff, including supplemental staff, employees and management, is expected.  Management personnel and supervisors at every level must share in the responsibility for ensure the implementation of this policy with a positive attitude at all times.
