5.4 Bereavement Leave

Bereavement leave allows a merit system employee to be given up to three (3) days with pay in the event of the death of an immediate family member (see section 9.1.) The leave must be taken within a reasonable time of the day of the death or the day of the funeral. The employee may use up to three (3) days of sick leave in addition to the bereavement leave.

An employee may use up to three (3) days of sick leave (see section 5.2) for the death of another person/persons connected with her/him.

The employee must notify her/his supervisor as far in advance as practicable of the need for this leave.

5.4.1 Proof Required for Bereavement Leave Pay

The supervisor may request proof that an employee’s immediate family member has died.

5.4.2 Pay for Bereavement Leave

The employee will be paid for the hours she/he is normally scheduled to work up to eight (8) hours per day on the day(s) she/he takes off and is not permitted to take other time off in lieu of this.
