New Findings for the Skeletal System:
UC San Francisco researchers made a surprise discovery of a new type of cell that explains how distress to the skin early in life may prime a person for inflammatory skin disease later. The discovery of this new cell type, according to the researchers, will certainly increase the understanding of how to treat autoimmune diseases like scleroderma and provide light on the nature of inflammatory disease in general. The results reinforce the idea that exposure may initially have lasting effects. Early exposure to inflammation can imprint an ability for tissues to develop inflammatory disease later in life. This new type of cell was found while researchers were investigating the effects of actions known to evoke immune responses in mice. One such action included knocking out a group of skin cells that suppress the immune system. The presence of a special cell that appeared to be operating as a sanctuary for pathogenic immune cells that are not typically seen in skin tissues was seen by the researchers in the absence of that regulation.
