The respiratory system is the biological system that engages in gas exchange.
It works with the circulatory system to deliver oxygen from the lungs to the cells, remove the carbon dioxide, return it to the lungs to be exhaled.
Healthy lungs take in about 1 pint of air about 12-15 times per minute.
The organs of the respiratory system include :
nose
pharynx
larynx
trachea
two bronchi (one for each lung)
bronchioles and smaller air passages
two lungs and the pleura, their covering
muscles of breathing (intercostal muscles)
the diaphragm

We only use one nostril when we breathe and switch back and forth between them. This aids in moistening the air we inhale and keeps the lungs free of discomfort. We do it without conscious knowledge, so we don't even know we're doing it.
