The main function of the muscular system is to be able to contract. Each movement in the body is the result of a muscle contracting.
Aids in the protection of organs and the skeletal system.
The three main types of muscles are: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth.
Origin: the attachment of the muscle to the bone that remains stationary
Insertion: the attachment of the muscle to the bone that moves
Belly: the fleshy part of the muscle between the tendons of origin and/or insertion
Aids with maintaining posture, producing movement, helping and protecting the structures of the body, managing waste materials, and producing body heat.
Characteristics: Excitability, Conductivity, Contractibility, Extensibility, and Elasticity
Skeletal muscle is composed of three layers: the epimysium, perimysium, and endomysium
Skeletal muscle fiber: long cyndrical, striated, multinucleated cell.
Appendicular muscles:
support, brace, and control movement of upper and lower limbs and stabilizes pelvic area
attachment on appendicular skeleton
ex: muscles in arms, legs, hands, feet, glutes, and shoulders
Axial muscles:
Support and move the head and vertebral column, control facial expressions, allow you to chew and process food, helps with breathing and protects the abdominal and pelvic organs
attachment point on axial skeleton
ex: facial muscles, head muscles, neck muscles, abdominal muscles
Believe it or not, the quickest muscle in the human body is the eye. In under 1/100 of a second the orbicularis oculi is able to constrict! This certainly explains the saying "In the blink of an eye."
