The project (marked by blue lines) is a part of an Industrial Conservation Area - Kelham Island, a historic area designated to preserve the industrial character and heritage, specialised metal making and working as well as cutlery.

The area is characterised by dense building development with a high number of up-to-six storeys buildings, homogenous and dense range of 2-3 storeys workshops. They are built with local sandstone, red brick, with Welsh/Westmorland slate or stone slate roofs.
