Curtain Call for 'Lost Girl.' Photo by Mrs. Olinger

MVHS Drama Club presents: Lost Girl

By Matt Milsop

Over the past month, the drama program put out their spring play. They decided on Lost Girl, a show about Wendy far after she had last seen Peter Pan. Mrs. Olinger thought she had a cast that would suit the play very well, and would put on a very engaging show. They faced some challenges along the way, but were ready for them and never missed a step creating an interesting and emotional story.

Putting together the show was a fun process for the crew and came with its surprises. A few students even got roles that Mrs. Olinger did not expect them to even try out for, but nonetheless crushed these roles. MVHS seniors Hallee Hazelton, and Hannah Varberg both played Wendy (the main character) for 2 performances to showcase their talents as some of the groups most prominent seniors this year. The crew all fit their roles smoothly and created a feeling of family within themselves and their peers.

Although they work together well, not everything was sunshine and rainbows. The cast faced some challenges along the way, but it only made them stick together more. Things like time commitment, and getting everything accomplished during that time were proven difficult as always. Mrs. Olinger also mentioned “there is a lot that needs to be done in order to put on a school production. Stuff most people don’t even think about.”

The journey was fun for the crew, but the results were even more rewarding. The show had a great turnout and the audience was always engaged. Some audience members were even seen crying during the performance. Mrs. Olinger stated that her favorite part of the outcome was seeing her students thrive on stage. “Seeing them create believable action through their character motivations and choices. Becoming an ensemble instead of just 13 individuals.”

To sum things up, creating a high school play is no easy task. An even harder task is creating a good one that keeps the audience glued to the stage the whole time. Despite these struggles, Mt. Vernon Drama Club has accomplished all that and more with Lost Girl and are hoping to keep this the standard throughout their future productions.

MVHS says goodbye to key staff

By Matt Milsop

For students who are unaware, multiple staff members are leaving MVHS this year. Most of these teachers have been teaching for a long time at Mt. Vernon and are either retiring or leaving for more personal reasons. Not only are teachers retiring, Marty Immekus, MVHS’s beloved janitor, has also decided this would be his last go-around. These staff members have all put in hard work to make sure students have the best possible experience in their classes and in high school in general.

“Overall Wednesday” was held this year on April 20 to honor Marty and the efforts he’s put towards helping keep our school clean and safe. Marty was known for his overalls so a mass email was sent out to the students and the staff to bring overalls to school and wear them on the special day. The turnout was great as it was easy to find somebody wearing overalls in the halls. It was also Marty’s last day at the school.

As for the teachers retiring, English teacher Ms. Lynne Cowherd, gifted teacher Ms. Mona Brown, and science teacher Mr. Tom McChesney will all be officially retiring. They have all put in lots of hard work to educate the future and if spotted in the halls they should definitely be thanked for all that they have done and the education that they have provided over the years. Ms. Muerita Scrivener, secretary to our MVHS counselors, is also retiring this year. She’s been a huge help to things such as the scheduling process, helping students with personal problems, and being there when students are in need.

There are also some staff members leaving for more personal reasons. Math teacher Ms. Daiwa McGuire will be out for most of the year next year as she spends time with her new baby. English teacher Ms. Emily Sampson, assistant band director Mr. Joey Carter, and counselor Ms. Ashley Finley are also leaving for personal and professional reasons as well.

All of these staff members have put a lot of time and effort into ensuring a good education for all of MVHS students.. If seen in the halls make sure to express gratitude towards them. It will definitely put a smile on their face knowing all the hard work they put into education has paid off, and provided a good experience for multiple generations of students.
