2022 Spring Sports Preview

Our spring sports programs start to get on their way this month, and with sports like softball, baseball, boys tennis, boys and girls track starting, the fun is just beginning. Baseball and softball jamborees on March 11-12 will kick off the season. It’s about time to pack up our basketball stuff and pick up a light coat for our spring sports.

Softball and baseball have similar sentiments as they’d like to play great defense in order to win games this year. The coaches have trust that runs will come around, but preventing them is going to be the hard part. Softball coach Matt Schubert stated, “We need to play good defense; if we do that we will be very, very good.”

Both teams are also confident in their new and upcoming players. With a plethora of talented freshmen joining baseball this year, Coach Nick Swillum is excited to improve upon last year's baseball season.

As for softball, Coach Shubert said, “there are upwards of 4-5 freshmen who could see time on varsity.” Either way, both these teams are thrilled to compete this year and are hopeful to get a good run at play-offs.

When it comes to track and field, the Mountaineers are just as ready as any other team. The teams were solid last year and are coming back this year even stronger than ever. With some standout seniors like Wyatt Corday, Dominic Dawson, Faith Rycraft, Teah Ray, and more, these teams have high aspirations to compete at a very high level this year.

Injuries have been a problem in past years but Coach Michelle Rust hopes for change. She mentioned, “I believe the key factors for our season will be injury prevention and quality work over quantity of work.” No matter what happens, these teams will be fun to watch and support throughout the season.

As for tennis, they look to their leaders for a good year. Seniors Curtis Meyer and Alvin Reid are likely to be key contributors to this team.

All in all, MVHS is in for an exciting spring filled with many different activities. From the dirt to the concrete to the rubber, all of our spring sports will surely bring entertainment to the fans and opportunity to the players.
