Masks make a fashion statement during pandemic
During the year 2020, one of the biggest unintentional fashion statements was introduced: the face mask. Though some may argue that a face mask is nothing but a precautionary statement, some have embraced “the face” and have developed a new fashion trend along with keeping themselves and others safe during these ongoing trying times.
According to an article done by The New York Times, “Almost every day brings an announcement (or two or three) of another company introducing masks — or an old company pivoting to offer them. There are now tie-dye masks. Masks made of silk, denim and the polyester and elastane used for bathing suits. Masks that come with reversible sequins…” It seems to be that companies have invested in the mandatory accessory and have embraced their own touch.
Luxury brands have even delved into the world of face coverings, some of the most popular being Burberry, Off-White, Supreme, JW Anderson, Dolce and Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci. Websites have even been made devoted to helping make a world full of COVID a little more fascinating. The New York Times article tells us, “There is a MaskClub.com, which is kind of like DollarShaveClub.com (but not exactly) with licensing deals with Hello Kitty and NASA and Batman, among others, so you can advertise your taste in cartoons or sports for $9.99 a month. Masks in tartan, camouflage and batik. Sparkly masks that suggest 'I am ready for a party' and pinstriped masks that suggest 'I am ready to work.'"
Brands, however, are not the only people making the world a little more fashionable. Everyday people have also chipped in and found ways to make elaborate masks. One of the most popular sites, Etsy.com offers an arrangement of options made by small-businesses. This is a fun option if you’re looking for a custom mask or if you’re just looking for that totally outrageous stand-out option.
Overall it seems that in these chaotic times of days full of nothing but sweatpants and hoodies and the occasional fancy dress Zoom call, choosing an elaborate mask might be fun. Whether it be a $400 luxury “silk face scarf” or a face covering sporting sequins and bows, just remember, you’re being a trendsetter!
How to prepare for upcoming spring, the season of new beginnings
Fresh buds bloom to release a sweet smell, the temperature slowly rises to warm your skin, animals awaken and the earth seems to come to life again. Even though winter still seems to have a hold on some, soon enough you will be feeling the beautiful spring weather.
A change in seasons marks an energetic shift in the environment and in oneself. This would include a shift in weather patterns; the sun being out more, snow and ice thawing, and rain. Also including a shift for people as well whether it be spring cleaning or a change in mindset.
Some suggestions for having a new beginning this spring would be deep cleaning your work or living area. Once it’s done, you’ll automatically feel a weight lifted off your shoulders.
Switch your wardrobe when needed; wearing the appropriate clothing for the weather is always the more comfortable option. Find new music and switch out the winter sad songs for more hopeful tunes.
Finally, take care of yourself. It’s easy to fall into the winter blues but overcoming it is just as important. As Robin Williams once cheesily said, "Spring is nature's way of saying, 'Let's party!'"
