Ladies snag 23rd win, sixth straight regular season win

As roads began to clear up from a lengthy snow storm, the Mount Vernon Lady basketball team got into gear to make up all the games postponed over the two-week period of no school.

Junior player Lexie Weldy says, “We slowed down and dreaded practices even more coming back because we were always tired and out of shape again.” She also feels as if the girls' workout, which involved weight lifting, was "non-beneficial for athletes who already have muscle endurance. We need more cardio encouragement...because it’s easier to decide to lift than to decide to go for a run.”

Coming back from break, the ladies broke into their first game against McDonald County Lady Mustangs, leading 10-0 less than two minutes into the game. At the end of the first, the ladies were up 31-11, largely thanks to Lacy Stokes incredible 15-point contribution. By the half, the girls defensively strived to keep the Mustangs back and left the score at 50-18.

In the final quarter, Stokes shined with her 42 point, 12-rebound performance as the ladies easily wrapped up the game, ending the game in a 84-32 victory over Lady Mustangs, marking Mt. Vernon's sixth straight win and 23rd win overall of the regular season.

Men take loss to the Irish

Springfield immediately took the lead 10-0 in the first few minutes of the game on February 12. Though the Mt. Vernon boys came roaring back with 14-12, catching up to the Springfield Catholic Irish proved to be a difficult feat.

The game was full of excitement: both offenses made an amazing effort to score at least 21 points each in just the first quarter alone.

Jumping right into the second quarter, there was a back and forth conflict between the Irish’s Zach Howell and the Mountaineers' Kai Brown. The Mountaineers easily took the lead in the first quarter 17-16 but then fell behind before the half was up trailing 35-33.

Mountaineers couldn’t hold up to Irish’s Howell as he pushed through the defensive end all night scoring points left and right, bringing the boys to 65-46 at the end of the third, Mountaineers at the rear. The boys didn’t give up but were then slapped back when Howell capped his 55-point performance with an Irish win of 86-65.
