The K and 3-4 buddies listened to the story, Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. Then they made their own creations using leaves. They worked together to change their leaves into things like fish, butterflies, and birds. Their artwork is hanging in the classroom for families to view during Open House in a few weeks.

Learning Highlights from the Week
We sorted attribute blocks based on shape, thickness, color and size. We answered more survey questions and looked at the total number in each group. We practiced counting carefully and accurately and shared counting strategies to help us keep track. We practiced counting across decades (29, 30 and 39. 40) while moving in different ways. The children also learned new games to help them recognize totals and record answers accurately.
This week we talked about pets and what they need in order to survive. We also sorted pictures into 2 groups: living and nonliving. We shared our reasons for how we knew if something was living.
Students also learned what citizens do to help their community. They practiced being good citizens by listening to and helping one another. They also helped clean up things that fell on the floor to help Mr. Eric when he vacuums at the end of the day.
During Reading Workshop, the children continued to listen to many books and share ideas about favorite parts. They started collecting books to look at in their own reading bags. They played games with rhyming words and learned the correct sounds for these new letters: Nn, Ii, and Ff.
We even started decoding words with letters we practiced last week. The children practiced tapping out the sounds in words like sat, mat, and Sam.
During Writing Workshop, the children continued to build good habits and increase their stamina. This week they worked on:
drawing clear pictures using shapes and lines
trying their best to draw details in their pictures
sharing their writing with peers
learning how to write sentences to match pictures
Reminders
Please be sure your child brings a water bottle and a jacket each day. We are also getting to that time of year when boots would be handy to have each day.
Please remember there is no school next Thursday and Friday. I will share another classroom newsletter on Friday, October 10th.
