Recycle Rhonda from Chittenden Solid Waste District visited on Monday. She taught us about reducing, reusing, and recycling. The children learned how all the trash goes in the landfill but we can limit what goes in there by recycling and composting. They practiced sorting materials and learned how important it is to reduce waste.
Important Dates

November 5th ~ Early Release Day
Learning Highlights from the Week
We worked on counting and comparing quantities. The children discussed when we measure things in our lives. Then we made a measurement stick out of 10 cubes to compare it to objects in the classroom. The children sorted objects that were shorter and longer than the cube tower. They practiced measuring accurately by lining up the bottom of the cube tower with the object. The children also listened to the story, Chrysanthemum and counted the number of letters in that name. We snapped cubes together and wrote letters on them to show the length of our names. We sorted cube towers based on who had the shortest name (4 letters) and longest name (8 letters) in the class. The children found someone who had a shorter name, longer name, and a name with the same number of letters as them. We also counted seeds in 2 different pumpkins and noticed the smaller pumpkin had more seeds than the bigger one!
Kindergarten students have been learning how to be a good friend, work together, treat others fairly and equally, and be respectful listeners. Our community becomes stronger when we all work together! We started discussing ways we could spread kindness in our community. Next week we will write kindness notes to attach to blankets to donate to a homeless shelter. This is called the "Blankets of Hope" project. You can read more about it here.
The children practiced these skills during literacy time:
segmenting words into syllables
adding and deleting final syllables
isolating the beginning and ending sounds in words
determining if words rhyme
counting words in sentences
browsing non-fiction books to learn new information
During Writing Workshop, the children practiced:
drawing clear pictures
adding labels and words to tell their stories
using power words to write
reading their work
sharing their writing with peers
