We enjoyed having 2 buddy times today. The children learned about the work of Martin Luther King. We listened to a book about his work and shared his message. The K and 3-4 buddies discussed what they can do each day to spread kindness and stand up for what is right. We also made a community poster to share his message about standing up to help others right now.

Learning Highlights from the Week
We continued to work on recognizing and building numbers using ten frames and fingers. We learned games to practice adding numbers and showing different number combinations. We listened to different stories and used pictures and numbers to show what happened. We even wrote equations to match problems. The children also worked on carefully writing single digit numbers accurately so they did not reverse digits.
We finished our Zoology unit this week. We reviewed what different animal groups have in common. We also shared about what makes animals different. Ask your child to tell you about a bird and bat. The children really enjoyed listening to many read alouds about animals (fictional and informational).
We completed part 2 of the Scat and Tracks program from VT Fish and Wildlife. This week we learned about the beaver. We learned about their habitat, food, and fun facts. Please encourage your child to look for animal tracks if you take walks at home.
During Reading Workshop, the children continued to use reading strategies to decode. They worked on:
touching words to track
looking at each letter to say a sound before blending to make the word
rereading to smooth out their voice
talking about books during read alouds
writing CVC words with beginning, middle, and ending sounds
During Writing Workshop, the kindergarten students practiced:
comparing and contrasting animals
writing about beavers
adding labels to pictures
using spaces when writing sentences
adding ending punctuation
rereading their work
