Volunteers from Community Bank visited UCS on Tuesday. They helped kindergarten kids write notes to roll up in blankets to donate to homeless shelters as part of the "Blankets of Hope" program. The children learned what empathy means and how someone might feel who doesn't have a home. They created notes from the heart to spread kindness and warmth to those in need. The volunteers will deliver the blankets to a local homeless shelter. Please check out the 21 day kindness challenge worksheet your child took home and encourage your child to participate this month!

Learning Highlights from the Week
We continued to practice counting and comparing quantities. The children looked at dot images and learned how to write equations to match the total. We also started a new unit and explored shapes. The children went on a shape hunt in the classroom and outside. They found many circles, rectangles, and squares at school. Please notice the family letters in your child’s folder for this new math unit.
We continued our Organisms unit and began learning about Zoology during literacy time. The children leraned that zoologists are scientists who study animals. This week they reviewed the difference between living vs nonliving things. They sorted animals into 2 categories: domestic vs wild and discussed the meaning. The children also looked through books about VT animals and decided on one to make during Integrated Arts next week (bunny, black bear, beaver, duck, or frog).
During Reading Workshop the children practiced:
looking closely at letters to decode new words
blending sounds to make words
touching each word while reading
listening for words with the same beginning and ending sound
reviewing power words: I, a, is, the, am, look, love & see
During Writing Workshop, the children have been busy drawing clear pictures using shapes and lines. Some children are starting to write sentences to match pictures. They are working on these skills:
forming letters correctly
stretching out words to write sounds
using spaces between words
using power words like "love" or "see" to help them write
rereading work
We cleaned out folders this week so the children are taking home all their writing from the fall. Enjoy reading the pieces together!
Reminders
Please be sure your child has a change of clothes at school. Most students had summer clothes and will need fall/winter clothes now.
