We made clay faces on trees with Mrs. Aucter for Integrated Arts. We have been working on drawing people during writing time so this was a fun way to make sure our faces had lots of details. The children used pinecones, needles, sticks, and leaves to add to their faces. They had a lot of fun making these clay faces on the UCS trail!

Learning Highlights from the Week
We continued to practice counting objects and recording totals. One day students counted different materials inside a bag to take “inventory”. They carefully counted the total, drew a clear picture to represent what was inside, and recorded the number. Students practiced showing totals using ten frames so they could organize amounts. They also ordered numbers from least to greatest. We continue to practice counting forward starting at different numbers and showing finger patterns every day.
We are focusing on what courage means this month. We read many stories that focus on this theme. Mrs. Cowan, the PE teacher, joined us for morning meeting today. We read the book Super Manny Stands Up and discussed how that character was courageous. We talked about how you can be brave and stand up for others when you notice people not treating others with kindness. The children decorated bobcat paw prints with pictures and colors that represent the brave helpers they are at UCS. We will display these around the school to show our caring and courageous community.
We continued to read and enjoy different stories during Reading Workshop. This week students worked on:
listening for words that begin with the same initial sound
looking for words and letters on the morning message
matching uppercase and lowercase letters
being storytellers and retelling stories
sharing ideas with partners
During Writing Workshop the children are busy learning what writers do each day. This week they worked on:
drawing clear pictures using shapes and lines
being storytellers and drawing parts of their stories
writing from top down, left to right
retelling their stories and adding more
sharing their work with peers
We also had fun singing music with Buddy Dubay on Monday! Be sure to check out his playlist for children. You can click here to listen to his songs.
Reminders
Please be sure your child has a change of clothes at school. Most students had summer clothes and will need fall/winter clothes now.
Please encourage your child to pack rain boots and a rain jacket on wet days so we can still go outside for a morning break. Thank you!
