Happy New Year! The children enjoyed seeing their friends again after a long vacation. They learned about resolutions and everyone shared something they hope to get better at or do this year. They also made candles with Mrs. Aucter during Integrated Arts. They really enjoyed warming up the beeswax sheets to roll into candles. Hopefully you can use these candles on these dark winter nights!

Learning Highlights from the Week
This week we worked on reading and showing numbers on our fingers and using ten frames. We practiced reading teen numbers and noticed all of them had a group of ten and some extra ones. The children played a few games to practice writing numbers. They worked on telling one more and one less. They enjoyed playing the game Racing Bears. They shared different ways you could split a roll to collect more pennies. We noticed different combinations of numbers like 5 and 6 while playing this game.
This week we read books about fish and shared what all fish have in common. We noticed things that make some animals similar and different and shared reasons. We reviewed what we learned about mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. We will be finishing our unit on Zoology next week.
We also started week one of the Scat and Tracks program from VT Fish and Wildlife. Each week we will watch a pre-recorded video to learn about the many species we have in Vermont. This week we learned about the gray fox. We learned about their habitat, food, and life cycle. We discovered ways to look for signs of these animals. The children will take home an animal tracks pocket guide and their science journal at the end of this program.
During Reading Workshop, the children worked on being strong readers. They practiced:
tapping sounds to decode words
touching each word while reading
listening for words with the same beginning and ending sound
reading CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words in isolation and within connected text
discussing information about fish and other animals
During writing time, the children worked on:
writing about fish and other animals
sketching a gray fox to put in their science journals
adding labels to pictures
correctly writing power words
including vowels in words
using spaces when writing sentences
