MJS Weekly Reflection

October 16-20

Another great week at MJS! Our MJS One community continues to shine. Seeing our community come together for the Spike for the Cure Volleyball Tournament was wonderful to see. Our MJS ONE community extended outside of our school this week when we welcomed Captain Nunn from the Madison Fire Department who spoke with our students about Fire Prevention and Safety. We are so thankful for our local emergency response departments who help protect and keep us safe everyday.

September Leaders of the Month

On Monday we had the opportunity to celebrate our September Student Leaders of the Month. At the end of each month our teachers choose two students from each team to represent their team as Leaders of the Month. A big congratulations to our Leaders of the Month and for all they bring to our MJS One Community on a daily basis. Thank you to these students for being great role models within our building. We look forward to celebrating our October Leaders of the Month within the next few weeks.

Fire Prevention with Captain Nunn

On Wednesday we had a special visit from Captain Nunn of our Madison Fire Department. Captain Nunn had the opportunity to speak with each grade level around the topic of Fire Prevention and Safety. As I shared with our students, our MJS One Community extends outside of the school in various ways. One way is with our local emergency response teams who work everyday to keep all of us safe and protected. At MJS we appreciate the partnerships and support we have from our local emergency response teams and also love having them in our building working with our students and staff.

Thank you Captain Nunn for spending time at MJS speaking with our students about this important topic!

Peer Leader Retreat

Our Peer Leaders are made up of 8th graders and we are excited for the great leadership they will bring to MJS this year. Ms. Gamba and Ms. Spangler are the advisors and set up the first Peer Leader Retreat of the year this past Tuesday. Along with various team building activities, students had a opportunity to brainstorm what they believed leadership is made up of. I had the opportunity to speak with our Peer Leaders during their retreat and was able to share a little bit about my leadership journey. We talked about the positive influence that Peer Leaders can have on our MJS One community especially with our 6th graders.

We are excited this year to partner with our local Project Community Pride organization with a focus on the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies which are Social Awareness, Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Responsible Decision Making and Relationship Skills. Through this partnership, lessons/activities will be created around SEL and our Peer Leaders will turnkey these lessons to our 6th graders during Advisory. We are looking forward to this great leadership opportunity for our Peer Leaders and for our MJS One Community working together to learn and grow!

Spike for the Cure Volleyball Tournament

Our Spike for the Cure Volleyball Tournament is an event that benefits the American Cancer Society in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Thank you to our Student Council along with Student Council Advisors, Ms. Siso and Ms. Kolinchak for organizing this great event for a great cause.

Teams created were made up of students and a teacher. Students led the creation of these teams and they worked on the designs of their shirts and team names.

The MJS gym was filled with positive energy on Thursday night and all teams did an awesome job! Our 8th grade team Mission Unblockables came out as the winner of the tournament. Congratulations!

Thank you to our volleyball teams and our spectators in attendance for making this a wonderful event for all!

7th/8th Grade Halloween Dance

Our 7th/8th Grade Halloween Dance will be this Friday, October 27th from 6-8pm at MJS. Tickets for the event will be sold during lunchtime this week (Tuesday-Friday). A permission slip must be completed prior to a student purchasing a ticket. Please take a moment to complete this permission slip if your child plans to attend the halloween dance.

The Week Ahead

We are entering the final full week of October at MJS! Marking period 1 ends on Wednesday, November 8th. We are looking forward to another great week of engaging lessons provided by our amazing teachers and continued success from our fabulous students!

Red Ribbon Week takes place each year from October 23 to October 31st. Red Ribbon Week highlights the importance of living a drug-free life. It presents an opportunity for parents, educators, and communities to reinforce the drug-free messages they share with their children throughout the year.
