6th Grade ELA Assembly

Andy Breckman is a long-standing Madison resident who has written, acted, and produced in many comedic tv shows and movies, including Rat Race, Saturday Night Live, Late Show with David Letterman, and Monk. He shared his own writing journey, even showing some actual middle school comics he’d created. Students saw, read, and performed a scene from a movie script he had written, and then watched a scene from the movie. Students heard about the drafting and revision process, and had the opportunity to ask questions.

MJS Student Council and Officer Ren

When the MJS Student Council heard about Officer Renato Capillas's family's loss, they wanted to help. In line with the school's theme, MJS One Community, they immediately felt connected to Officer Ren and knew they needed to get involved.  They used every opportunity to raise money to help the officer and his family.  They raised money by selling pizza during the school dance, selling hot chocolate after school for a week, and selling pickles at the pickleball tournament. All together, the students were able to raise $1000.  The student council had the opportunity on Tuesday to present the $1000 to Officer Ren.

6th and 7th Grade Astronomy Dome

6th and 7th grade students took a trip through the MilkyWay and beyond this week with Mr. Aram Friedman and his Astronomy Dome.  They marveled at celestial bodies  such as the planets, comets, asteroids and galaxies. Students viewed some of the only detailed images and close up video of our sun and learned about various constellations and the stars that comprise them. It was a great way to really see and understand the enormous distances and sizes between objects in the universe.  To round it all out we discussed the exciting details of the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8th!! A big thank you to the Madison Education Foundation for providing this grant to support this wonderful opportunity for our students.

Harlem Wizards Visit MJS

On Wednesday we had a special guest from the Harlem Wizards visit our cafeteria to promote the upcoming Wizards game that will be held on April 25th at 7pm at FDU. Our guest shared some of his tricks as well as helping one of our students demonstrate some of their skills! See more information below about the upcoming Harlem Wizards game!

Important Information

Technology Reminder about Student Chromebook Usage

In Madison, we utilize a 1:1 Chromebook model where all students (grades 6-12) receive a district owned Chromebook to utilize during the school day and at home. While there is no cost for the use of the Chromebook, it is important that Chromebooks be maintained and handled in a responsible way. As we continue to move through the school year, we wanted to utilize this time as a reminder for our students and families about the importance of handling Chromebooks with care to prevent damage to the device. A message was shared over the PA on Friday with our students as a reminder. The district has expectations and protocols that are listed on the district website that we continue to follow at the building level.

We would like to highlight the specific section regarding lost and damaged chromebooks as a reminder to all parents and guardians:

In the event a Chromebook, case, or charger is lost or damaged beyond repair, parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of replacement equipment.

Costs:

Note: Final assessment of damage and fines is determined by the Technology Department.

Students are also responsible for the care of any loaners they use. Damage to loaners is subject to the same rules as permanently assigned Chromebooks.

In case of theft, parents/guardians are required to file a formal police report with the Madison Police Department.

Below are the direct links from the district website that pertains to Chromebook care and protocols followed for lost/damaged Chromebooks.

Thank you for your assistance in helping to remind our students about maintaining and handling our Chromebooks in a responsible and safe way.
