MFL

Following the popular culinary success for Year 7s and 9s. The Modern Foreign Languages offered the same opportunity to the Year 8s, during Tutor Time, to experience firsthand European foods in our canteen. Mrs Julia Collins, Principal, offered one free food item to every single student so that they would not miss on this incredible cultural opportunity.

Cucina and the Modern Foreign Languages team worked together to design a menu which offered a selection of typical dishes. Whilst they were eating in the canteen, students completed a range of cultural and linguistic activities, with their Chromebook, about the country which they tasted the food from. Students ordered their food item in the Target Language - with their teacher’s support.

The menu was as follows:

  • Monday for Chaucer / Mandela - Cheese Croissant and Pain au Chocolat

  • Tuesday for Darwin / Curie - Cheese Twist and Churros with Chocolate

  • Wednesday for Da Vinci / Seacole - Ham and Cheese Croissant and Waffles

  • Thursday for Brunel / Shakespeare - Pain au Chocolat and Cheese Twist

Students had therefore the opportunity to access different culinary experiences and share these with their peers from other colleges.

We were delighted to see the Year 8s enjoying the culture of different countries, making them inquisitive, risk-takers and communicators as part of their IB MYP Programme.

This was also a fantastic first extra-curricular step as part of their journey into languages. We will be offering more opportunities in the near future as the Year 8s will all choose a language for GCSE.
