Literacy and Reading

Literacy @ The Leigh has continued to develop and expand this year with the introduction of new reading strategies.

Students have been taking part in reciprocal reading interventions during tutor time each week and have been exposed to a variety of texts, from the classic 'Tell-tale Heart' by Edgar Allen Poe, to Dickens extracts, The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank and a Roald Dahl short story.

Students have also faced the rigours of completing three Accelerated Reader tests across the year to monitor their progress. The mass testing in the sports hall allows students to complete the test with as little fuss as possible and ensures that we can track our students reading ages and reading progress.

As well as ensuring students are assisted with their literacy skills, The Leigh Academy also promotes reading for pleasure through our library, where students can access a range of literature including books about, or written by, our new figureheads, Mary Seacole, David Attenborough, Marie Curie, William Shakespeare and Nelson Mandela and the 16 B4 16 challenge for Key Stage 4 students.

More opportunities for reading for pleasure will also be launched in September, so keep your eyes open to take part in a range of challenges on a range of platforms, and don't forget to keep reading over the summer holidays!
