GCSE Business groups

As our Year 11 business learners finished their examinations and drew to a close three years of GCSE study in Business, it was an exciting time for the department: they were the first group of students taught by Mr Hart in the academy, and the first group that Mr Adeduntan and Mr Hart have dispatched to complete public examinations since joining the academy. There is an optimistic air around the Business department, following an extensive revision focus with year 11 students, ensuring that all business learners have the language and exam skills to succeed in their Business course. We all await the 25th August for results day and discussions about business course opportunities at the new Attenborough College.

Year 10 Business students are gearing up for their second year studying Business with a clear focus on improving their revision techniques and making sure that all homework tasks are caught up with. Their PPE results reflect the challenges to be faced by students working through a mesh of exams and assessment deadlines at The Leigh Academy. This essential practice has helped re-energise many of our young minds, with thoughts of their potential. Well done for your resilience and responsibility in taking your GCSE grades towards surpassing your target grades. (You should also check out the QR code for additional revision materials).

BTEC Business

Year 13 ended a challenging 2 year program with 12 of 19 final students achieving Distinction or higher. Sam, Layla and Timmi deserve special mention for their overall D* grade, as well as the very high calibre of written work they handed in for their Unit 1 and Unit 8 assignment work.

Big shoes indeed for our up-and-coming year 12’s to fill. We anticipate much improvement for the Marketing External Assessment retake, as well as good grades for the Personal and Business Finance exam from June, especially with so many of you (almost 50%) also enrolled on the Certificate in Financial Studies course.

Financial Studies

Results are in (pending a few retake opportunities) and the year 13 Diploma in Financial Studies group are all now relaxing having achieved almost 60% of the 26 who sat their final exams, meeting or exceeding their target grades. Well done to all of you who made it through the daunting CeFS and upped your game. Your results are testament to your resilience and maturity through many changes and problems caused by the pandemic. You will be well placed to handle everything that careers in finance can throw at you.

Year 12 are likewise in a strong position as they transition from the Certificate in Financial Studies to the Diploma. Resit results come out on 20th July, but at present we have 27 of the 35 students with C or above. A strong place to be heading into the final year of school. Keep an ear to the ground for continued tumultuous financial headlines, and see how you can apply what we are learning to the state of the economy today!

IB Business Management

Students in Year 12 have completed the first stage of their Internal Assessment project - a 500 word plan for their business investigation. This year companies under the microscope include JD Sports, Five Guys, UniQlo, as well as local firms in facilities management, engineering, and even industrial exhaust supplies. An eclectic mix of business projects for students to showcase their research and evaluation skills, as long as they remember to follow the structure laid out by the IB gurus!

Year 13 finished their Business Management IB collecting their results earlier in the month and it was a great day to see you all again and congratulate you all on your achievements. All students are now competent at discussing business at a high level and can recognise and interpret key commercial principles effectively.

Next year we are looking forward to some business trips - to the city and Stratford, as well as another collection of student businesses in our 10X competition. Have a well earned break over the summer and see you all in our new corporate headquarters in Shakespeare College next year.
