Curie Activity Days

Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th July saw us bid a fond farewell to our name of Darwin College and welcome our new figurehead, Marie Curie, with two days of activities. The students in the college did themselves proud over these days and showed they were thinkers who are open-minded as we spent time learning about this incredible woman.

We started the days with a launch assembly that asked students to embrace Curie’s qualities of being resilient, passionate and determined. Our students certainly stepped up to that challenge!

The Research Project saw our young people navigating resources to find out more about Curie and another significant woman in science of their choice. This finished with all students presenting their work to their tutor group. The Curie tutors spoke highly of the engagement with this work and were impressed with how articulate our students were as communicators. Skills of creativity and caring attitudes were then highlighted in our charity project. Groups were tasked with creating the most innovative fundraising idea with the best idea having a donation made to the Marie Curie Cancer Research on their behalf. In addition to this, all year groups took it in turns to participate in a game of Taskmaster that challenged them to work as a team and as individuals to complete a variety of tasks for points. These ranged from the silly: hide and seek with Ms McCabe Knowles and the artistic: creating a drawing as a group whereby they could only communicate by drawing on each other’s backs. Students thoroughly enjoyed these games and were open-minded thinkers throughout. Another highlight of the two days was the scavenger hunt that students completed in teams. Using problem solving skills, groups had to answer questions in order to retrieve puzzle pieces from around the school. The sense of competition and risk-taking involved meant that students took this very seriously and were certainly playing to win!

Curie students exhibited maturity and intelligence over the course of the two days. We are really excited to embrace the values and qualities of Marie Curie as we start a new chapter as Curie College.
