Chumash Family Life

Families are very important to the Chumash. The Chumash shared the owning of the land and the house with everyone in the family kind of like a communist country. In the house, grandparents told the children how to behave. The children watch the parents work as well. Sometimes, the children practiced to be adults by using pots, pans, tools and bows and arrows. The women in the family made all of the decisions. Most of the family is centered on finding food. Everyone liked to play a game called tikawich.
