Personal Fitness (0.5 Credit)
This half-credit course builds on middle school physical education and focuses on integrating physical activity with personal fitness. Students assess their fitness levels, track activity, and design a four-year personal fitness plan through grade 12. Emphasis is on lifelong health, goal setting, and developing confidence as active, competent movers. Technology such as pedometers, heart rate monitors, and fitness apps may be used for feedback and progress tracking.
Note: This course must be taken together with Physical Education Lifetime Activities (0.5 Credit) to meet the full credit requirement.
Physical Education Lifetime Activities (0.5 Credit)
This half-credit course builds skills and confidence through a variety of physical activities, games, and sports that promote lifelong fitness. Students participate in target, net, field, invasion, and aquatic activities while refining movement skills and applying rules, strategies, and teamwork. The course emphasizes personal fitness, fair play, and developing healthy habits that extend beyond school.
Note: This course must be taken together with Personal Fitness (0.5 Credit) to fulfill the full physical education credit requirement.
Physical Education Electives
Weight and Resistance Training 1A (0.5 Credit)
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of weight and resistance training with a focus on safety, proper technique, and training etiquette. Students learn how to develop muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall fitness through exercises using free weights, machines, body weight, resistance bands, and other equipment. Emphasis is placed on correct posture, breathing, spotting, and safe use of equipment. Students design and follow a personal training plan to build lifelong fitness habits.
Note: This course must be taken together with Weight and Resistance Training 1B (0.5 Credit) to complete the full credit sequence.
Building on concepts from Weight and Resistance Training 1A, this course expands students’ knowledge of training principles, methods, and muscle group functions. Students assess their strength, endurance, flexibility, and body composition, then apply principles like specificity, overload, variation, and progression to design or refine their personal training programs. Instruction reinforces safety, proper technique, and the use of various equipment such as free weights, resistance bands, and medicine balls. Students track progress and adjust their workouts using available fitness technology to meet personal goals and build lifelong fitness habits.
Prerequisite: Completion of Weight and Resistance Training 1A (0.5 Credit) is strongly recommended.
Weight and Resistance Training 2A (0.5 Credit)
This course builds on prior training by focusing on heart rate management and body composition. Students learn how to improve cardiovascular fitness, increase lean body mass, and enhance overall conditioning. Using heart rate and body composition assessments, students design and monitor personal training programs aimed at lowering resting heart rate (RHR), increasing VO₂ Max, and maintaining activity within their target heart rate (THR) zone. Exercises may include free weights, resistance bands, bodyweight training, and plyometrics. Technology is used to track progress and guide adjustments to training plans.
Note: This course must be taken together with Weight and Resistance Training 2B (0.5 Credit) to complete the full credit sequence.
Prerequisite: Completion of Weight and Resistance Training 1B (0.5 Credit) is strongly recommended.
Weight and Resistance Training 2B (0.5 Credit)
This course advances students’ fitness knowledge by introducing circuit training to enhance workout efficiency and performance. Building on concepts from Weight and Resistance Training 2A, students combine aerobic and anaerobic exercises to improve strength, endurance, and overall conditioning. After assessing muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition, students design or update personalized training programs that integrate circuit training principles. Throughout the course, students monitor heart rate and progress using available technology to refine their goals and maintain balanced fitness routines.
Prerequisite: Completion of Weight and Resistance Training 2A (0.5 Credit) is strongly recommended.
Team Sports 1, 2, and 3 (0.5 Credit Each)
The Team Sports courses build physical fitness, teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship through a variety of athletic activities. Students strengthen movement skills, coordination, and understanding of rules and gameplay while developing leadership, communication, and a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.
Each Team Sports course (1, 2, or 3) earns 0.5 Physical Education (PEP1010) or elective credits and can be earned through participation in a Kealakehe High School athletic program. All athletic participation must be verified by the Athletic Director and align with the HIDOE Physical Education Content and Performance Standards III. This process allows students to earn credit for their commitment and contributions to Kealakehe athletics while meeting graduation requirements.
