Principal's Message

Dear Brown School family,

So this just happened! Our new sign arrived and it is beautiful!

Did you know that you can read the morning and afternoon PA announcements that your students listen to each day at school? Under the Students menu on the school website, click the Announcements link. This will bring you to a Google Slide Deck with the announcements organized by date/time. You can sometimes also see some of the announcements for the next day.

The grading period for middle and high school students is scheduled to end on September 20th. For elementary students, it will end on October 14th. By now, your student should have some grades posted for each class. You can check your student's grades through the Infinite Campus portal. For information on how to access your account, please see the article below called "Infinite Campus Parent Portal Directions Guide."

Don't forget that Open House for Current Students is scheduled for Wednesday, September 14th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. We will start our evening in the auditorium. I hope to see you there!

Love,

Dr. Angela

This Week's Essentials

Dismissal

Parents and Students are doing a GREAT JOB during dismissal. We are now moving so quickly that the car line is having to wait on traffic to clear from Muhammad Ali. We have been dismissing our last students at approximately 3:05! We are also not getting reports of traffic issues anymore.

At 3:05, the pick-up lines will close if there aren't anymore cars in the alley. Parents will then need to pick up students by driving to the front door of the school at the Welcome Center. Please ring the bell under the new blue school sign to enter the building with your car tag.

Parents, we are already clearing the alley and sidewalk faster than former years! Way to go and thank you for showing the Brown School expectations of being safe, responsible, respectful, and pursuing excellence!

Soccer continues to be great and our teams are looking forward to getting back out on the field. Our girls beat KCD last Thursday to become the winningest team in program history and beat KCD for the first time in program history. They will be at Bullitt Central Wednesday and Fern Creek Thursday. The boys have unfortunately had a few matches canceled lately, but have been practicing hard and gearing up for a tough challenge at St. X on Thursday.

Volleyball has been doing great and coming so close to victory. The team has been giving it their all and working really hard to improve. They will be at Walden on Wednesday, hoping to continue their growth. Go Lady Bears!

Cross country is going great and our runners are getting lots of good experience in our meets. At the St. X meet last week, Lucy O'Brien and Ethan Wright both medaled and finished in the top 5. They will be in action Wednesday in the JCPS meet at Champions Park. Here is the meet schedule for this year: LINK.

Golf is still going strong and all of the players are getting much better. They will have an open match Wednesday at Seneca Course and will take on Atherton on Thursday at Cherokee Course.

We're well on our way into this school year, and the homework and study time are beginning to pile up! While it is important to stay on top of our studies and complete our assignments, it is also important to have time at home that is not devoted to school work. It is recommended for everyone (parents included) to take at least a 5-10 minute break every hour of work. Students who are able to take consistent breaks (both during the school day and at home) are often more engaged, able to focus more, and improves behavior in the classroom environment. Here are some breaks (often called brain breaks) that you can use with your child at home if they are struggling to get through an assignment.

The end of the first 6 weeks is approaching (9/20/22). Now is a great time to take initiative and check on your grades and discuss with teachers if your grade is not where you think it should be. Please utilize your advisor and study hall teachers, they are your educational ally and can help you with those communications.

All Juniors will have the opportunity in Norah's Career Choices class to take a diagnostic practice ACT to help pinpoint areas they may need support in before the real ACT they will all take in March. It is currently scheduled for 9/20/22 and will occur during their regular class time.

Reminders:

SENIOR FREE ACT-All seniors will receive a free ACT on Oct 6th at Brown! No action is needed to sign up.

PSAT/NMSQT-All Juniors have an opportunity to take the PSAT on Oct 12th! If you are a sophomore and sign-up to take the PSAT, you will be charged a fee of $18. We have limited tests available. Sophomores only, please sign up HERE!

Elective class fees have been delayed due to a glitch with My School Bucks. Anticipate elective fees to post soon and the due date will be 9/30/22.

Mental Health Awareness/Suicide Prevention Lessons begin 8/31 and end 9/9. Please reduce the stigma surrounding mental health needs and suicide by talking to your loved ones. The new nationwide mental health support/suicide prevention hotline is 988 and can be used like 911. You can call or text 988 for help! For non-emergent needs, students, teachers, and parents can refer a student using the Student Support Form linked to the left!
