Principal's Message

Dear Brown School family,

We had the two most amazing dances Friday night, thanks to the ingenuity of staff member Tifaney Parry. We held our first ever Black & White Ball on the rooftop of the YMCA Garage. Middle school students had a blast at their dance and then our high school students danced in the glow of the beautiful city lights of downtown Louisville. It was definitely a memory maker event.

Field Day is being planned for Friday, October 14th, weather permitting. Field Day will take place at Waterfront Park on the Great Lawn. Our elementary students will start their day full of fun physical activities at 8:45 and will end at 10:45 AM. Returning this year, middle and high school students will also get to take part in Field Day! Our upper school students will begin their activities at noon and will end at 2:00 PM.

There will not be a Bear Essentials next week due to the short week for Fall Break. I will be out of the office from September 23rd through October 2nd and will not have access to email or phone. If you need assistance, please reach out to our assistant principals Amy Thornton (K-5) and Dr. Brian Garrett (6-12).

Love,

Dr. Angela*

This Week's Essentials

A Request from our neighbor:
Please don't walk through or park in Murphy's lot

I am writing to you in regards to the parking and pedestrian issues that are arising behind the Brown School and with the Murphy & Associates PLC parking lot. We are having two issues I would like you to address. The first and most concerning is that children and their parents/guardians are walking across the parking lot in a dangerous way. Yesterday afternoon a worker in my building nearly backed over a child who cut behind her vehicle as she was backing into her parking spot. This happened to me this morning when a young girl and her grandmother cut in near to my vehicle as I was backing into my parking spot. Pedestrians must to stay on the sidewalk while going to the Brown School and not cut behind or in front of vehicles in our parking lot. We must do whatever we can to avoid what would be a terrible tragedy if a child was hit. Second, to many parents are using the parking lot as a staging area both in the morning and afternoons. Even though they are only there a short period of time, it has become a distraction and nuisance. Please ask you parents to avoid using our parking lot as a staging area for pick up and drop off.

I appreciate your assistance and wish you and the Brown School family the best year. If I can be of assistance for you please let me know.

Respectfully,

J.P. Ward

Technology Spotlight

Our Brown Bears are creating all kinds of new things with technology. This week we are spotlighting Mrs. Alayna's 6th Grade Math Class.

Mrs. Alayna designed a Project-Based Learning experience which had students design 3D models of tents in the program Tinkercad. Then they were able to print out their models on the 3D printers in the Ursa Innovation Lab. They used their math knowledge to find the surface area of their tents. Lastly, they created a Google Slides or Canva presentation to document their PBL and uploaded it to their JCPS Digital Backpack.

The girls had strong runs with Sara Rogers, Erin Rogers and Lucy O'brien all receiving medals for their performances.

Soccer continues to be great and have historic seasons. Our girls had a great 3-2 win against Male on Monday, beating them for the first time in program history. They will be back in action tonight against Bullitt Central at Sun Valley Park. Our boys have played some really tough teams and we have been really proud of their effort. They took Male to overtime, after losing 10-0 to them last year. Then, had a huge 6-2 win over Seneca last night. We have a double header on Thursday at Waggener, with the boys at 5:30 and the girls at 7:15

Volleyball is continuing to head in the right direction and playing their best volleyball of the season. On Monday, our JV team beat Western in 2 sets and our varsity team lost in 3 sets in a really close game. They are playing at home on Thursday against Beth Haven, JV at 5:00 and varsity at 6:00.

Cross country ran strong races with a lot of PR's this weekend at the Capitol Hill Classic, followed by another JCPS meet in a scorcher yesterday. Come out and support our runners anytime. Here is the meet schedule for this year: LINK.

I am LOVING visiting classrooms this week and talking to your lovelies about love and life and the meaning of it all:) More specifically I visited the 8th grader with Robin to discuss Brown high school, and yesterday I visited the 7th graders to talk about reclaiming our mistakes. Ask them about Kintsugi. Tomorrow I will be with the 6th graders discussing coping skills.

Check out this wonderful slide by my wonderful colleague Ms. Christy that goes into detail about the new cognitive abilities test and how to sign up your child if they're not already identified.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful week and remember to use the Student Support Team Request form to get in touch with myself or anyone on our team.

Mental Health Practitioner

David Rutledge - Click to EMAIL

As we move into the fall and cooler weather, often anxiety and depression start to rise up in many as there is less light and opportunity for time outside. Seasonal affective disorder affects many people, in addition to many other stressors that arise during the fall in school. If your child starts to struggle as the year goes on, I just wanted to offer a reminder that every JCPS school offers mental health services in the school setting.

Currently our process for obtaining services starts with:

  • Make a referral through our student support form. This can be filled out by you, your student, or even a faculty member. It is our current goal to check in with every referral within 1-2 days depending on need. Currently our students have taken to this process very well, and have sent in many requests for support in just the one month of school we've had!

  • Typically the next step is for the respective school counselor to check in with your student to ascertain their needs and how best to support them.

  • If we observe that your student may benefit from more regular meetings/support we will send home a permission form for services with your student. This can be for either individual meetings or group. In order for us to legally be allowed to meet regularly with your student we need these to be filled out and returned to the Student Support Center as soon as possible.

If you have any questions about services provided, or need assistance in filling out a support form feel free to reach out to me at david.rutledge2@jefferson.kyschools.us.
