Principal's Message

Dear Brown School Family,

Happy Lunar New Year! I am lucky to have a family on my street who celebrates Lunar New Year and is generous to invite our whole street to celebrate with them. One of the best parts of working for JCPS and at Brown School is learning about other cultures, which promotes mutual understanding. I wish all our families a new year filled with many blessings, good health, and happiness.

Love,

Dr. Angela

Costa Rica Summer Trip

Dear Brown School families,

Your student is invited to join us on an upcoming educational travel experience to Costa Rica in Summer 2024! When students travel, they expand their knowledge of the world around them, discover more about themselves, and grow more confident. These skills are critical for creating the global citizens of tomorrow, and I would love to have your student join me on this adventure.  Students in grades 7-11 are invited to join.

Come hear all the details, including the itinerary, activities, academic opportunities, and the cost of our trip at our informational meeting on February 1 at 6:00pm. The meeting will take place on a Virtual Meeting. Please click here to register for the meeting and reciive more info: https://rsvp.eftours.com/8kte2a5

There are limited spots on this trip, so we would love to have you attend this meeting to learn more about this exciting opportunity! Thanks,

Dr. Kat

All middle school students are taking the BESS screener this week, which is the district mandated mental health screener that all 6th-12th graders are taking throughout our district.  Click this link for more info.  We will have more information soon from the district about ways to support our students by using this screener.  Those students who parents identified that they did not want their child to participate have not taken the screener.

Our Peace Ed Conflict Resolution workshops are still going strong and our students have already learned a lot of great coping strategies for dealing with disagreements.  Be sure to ask them about some of the games they have played.

We have noticed an uptick in students requesting help with anxiety these past few weeks.  Please continue to have honest and open converstiaons with your child, and yourself.  Our young people do what they see from us:).  Check out this website for tips and articles to help support your child.

That's all for now.  Thank you so much for letting me work with your darlings.

Hey Brown School! We're moving pretty quickly through January, and the weather is turning pretty gray. As is common during winter months, we are seeing an uptick in anxiety and depression/moodiness in our students. This is often called Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it is assumed to be related to the lack of access to direct sunlight during the winter months. As a result, we are seeing a lot of students who are having a hard time sitting in class, dealing with peer conflicts, or handling stress from their assignments. A common technique I like to use with students who come to me for anxiety is a grounding technique. Grounding techniques are used to help us connect to what is actually happening around us as opposed to the "reality" our anxiety makes us believe. Here is a good link to help explain grounding techniques to you and your student. This is a useful tool that can be implemented anywhere, either at home or at school. If you have any questions about techniques like this, or if your student is struggling please feel free to reach out to me or their respective counselor.
