Principal's Message

Dear Brown School Family,

All elementary students should have brought home their report cards yesterday. Please remove the report card from the envelope, sign the envelope, and send the envelope back to school in your child's folder.

I hope to see you this Friday night at our Annual PTSA Fall Festival!

I am signed up to donate blood at our Blood Drive. Are you?

Love,

Dr. Angela

This Week's Essentials

Elective Course Fees

The issues with My School Bucks and billing for electives has been resolved. Please carefully review your student's statement and ask your child's teacher or notify kathleen.wynn@jefferson.kyschools.us if you have a billing error (such as being billed for a course your student is no longer enrolled in). It is much easier to remove an incorrect fee than it is to reimburse after it has been paid.

Technology Spotlight

Neysa's Journalism Class

It is almost time for the release of the 2022-23 Bear Necessities Online Digital Newspaper. The Journalism Tech Team came to the Ursa Innovation Lab to learn all about Google Sites from our School Technology Coordinator, Drew Paige. A huge shoutout to them for building the new Bear Necessities website from scratch, creating a new logo and embedding news articles from their classmates. The 1st Edition will be released to the public next week.

Student Support Team

Elementary Counselor

This month is Bullying Prevention Month. This month's Core Counseling Curriculum lessons with Miss Christy are titled, "Our Words have Power", focusing on the positive and negative, long-lasting impact that our words have on others and on ourselves. Words DO hurt. So, we need to THINK before we SPEAK to others and to ourselves.

The NNAT3 Gifted and Talented Screener that was going to take place today for 3-5 grade has been postponed due to technical difficulties. We will test those grades tomorrow and Friday.

VERY IMPORTANT: This information is for ALL grade levels. If you want your child to attend virtual or in person therapy appointments at school, the therapist MUST be on our district MOA list. If they are not on the MOA list, then you will need to schedule their appointments outside of school hours. This is a liability issue. To find out if your child's therapist is on the list, and to help us make sure your child has the proper space and supervision while they are having their appointment, complete the Student Support Request Form and check the box for approval of outside services. If this is all totally confusing to you, go ahead and complete the student support request form as well and we'll clear things up.

Check out Miss Christy's Virtual Office for more information about our elementary world.

Christy and I are in full swing with the NNAT3 Gifted and Talented Screener. Those who did not test today will be able to test tomorrow and Friday. Thank you all for your patience as we navigate the waters of a new assessment!

I've been leaning in heavy with our middle schoolers on conflict management and creating a positive school culture. In the next few weeks we will begin our middle school Fill a Bucket with Kindness Challenge. Many classes have already begun. Talk to your darling about ways they can show real kindness.

Finally, our 8th graders will attend the JA Inspire Career Fair field trip at the Expo Center this Friday. Bus leaves at 10. You should have already received the field trip permission form from your child. If not, let me know:). Students have been told to wear either a Brown School shirt or 'dress to impress'. This is a great opportunity for them to make connections in the community that might lead to internships/jobs down the road.

I'm also re-posting the info below from the last two newsletters. It's very important that you reach out ASAP if this applies to you and your students.

Halloween is almost here, and we are excited at the J Graham Brown School! Like many of you, I enjoy a scary movie and some of my favorite candy during this time of year. Another perennial favorite of many is to wear different costumes, and try on different outfits to surprise our friends, be scary, or enjoy a sense of belonging to a group. Like wearing a costume, our students are trying on different aspects of their personalities to figure out who they are and where they fit in (especially our High school and Middle school kids). Figuring out who you are can be hard, especially if you feel you don't fit in. It is important to know what resources are out there to help our kids while they are going through this process. Here are some resources to students from a variety of walks of life and experiences:

LGBTQ Students

Students of Color

Students with Disabilities

Mental Health Services

Suicide Prevention (the suicide prevention hotline is now 988 nationwide)

Domestic Violence/Trauma

Connections

SBDM Update

We have an SBDM meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 1st. HERE is the agenda!

Cultural Connections

Here are some cultural connections from our SDL Framework. Students should be progressing in Empathy indicator 1 as they grow and develop in our school community. As young students, students are learning how to be kind to each other. As they mature, they learn to understand others' perspectives and view actions through varied lenses. Older students then become agents of change, which should be evidenced in projects and work in the classroom.

Halloween Fun At Home
