Principal's Message
Dear Brown School Family,
Our assistant principals and counselors returned to work this Monday! Now, we can really get to planning on how to make this the best school year ever!
This week we rolled out our new school website. You can view it HERE. If you are seeing an error page when you click the link, you need to empty your cache/history. See below for some instructions on how to do this.
Love,
Dr. Angela
More Staffing Changes!
Chris Wise, Attendance Clerk
My name is Chris Wise and I am happy to now be a part of the J. Graham Brown family as your new Attendance Clerk. Most recently I have been self-employed as an online e-commerce retailer. Prior to that, I was in hotel management. I have also held supply chain logistics and warehouse management positions at UPS, Amazon, and Zappos. This will be a new experience for me, but I’m excited about the opportunity and what the future holds.
I am originally from Shelby County but have resided in J-Town with my wife Kelley and kids for the past six years. I have a 20-year-old daughter, Makenzie, who is now living on her own and enjoying her life as an adult. My two youngest boys keep us busy, mainly with their sports activities. Braxton, 11, loves basketball and is excited to be attending J. Graham Brown this year as a 6th grader. Beckett, our youngest, is 8 years old and is the football player in the family. He will be attending 3rd grade at Watterson Elementary.
I am an avid Kentucky Wildcats fan. I have also enjoyed coaching my son’s basketball team for the last two seasons. I became involved with the drama club in high school and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in California after graduation. Since that time, community theater has always been a big part of my life as both an actor and director. I am a huge fan of the NFL and I love fantasy football. I play in several fantasy football leagues and have been commissioner of my own league for the past 20 years. I recently created my own website where I have been writing fantasy football content with a podcast and YouTube channel hopefully coming soon.
I can’t wait to get started in my new position and look forward to meeting all of the staff and the students during the school year.
This Week's Essentials
Peace Park Beatification Day
*****NEW DATE*****
Sunday, July 31, 2022, 12-4 PM
Please come join our PTSA and Alumni Association to kick off our 2022-23 School Year. This is a family-friendly event for parents, grandparents, siblings, neighbors, alumni, and community members.
Goals:
🔹Clean up flagpole planter at corner of M. Ali & 1st
🔹Safety check at fence lines
🔹General clean up
🔹Beautification
We would REALLY like to fill in the gap in the track over the tree roots. There needs to be a more permanent solution but for the time being if we could get maybe landscape timbers or something to edge it and secure them to the earth and then fill this area with mulch, we would be in a much better place. This means lots of mulch!
If the heat index is too high, this date will be postponed.
Supplies to bring or purchase:
🔹Ice and water or Gatorade
🔹Sunscreen
🔹Work gloves
🔹Rubber gloves
🔹Garbage bags
🔹Leaf bags
🔹Gold and blue flowers
🔹Planting soil
🔹Mulch for a planter on the corner of M. Ali & 1st
🔹Yard and Work tools to bring:
🔹Roundup
🔹Lawn mower and gas
🔹Weed eater and extra battery
🔹Leaf blower and extra battery
🔹Rakes
🔹Shovels
🔹Scoops / large dustpans for scooping
🔹Branch trimmers
🔹Hand clippers or trimmers
🔹Hand shovels for flower planting
New Main Entrance and Welcome Center in Progress
When you visit our school starting in August, you will come in through our new main entrance! JCPS Facilities has a new J. Graham Brown School sign on order that will be placed over the current Ahrens sign. When you buzz in through the doors, there will be a new wheelchair ramp inside. All visitors will be routed into our new Welcome Center where they will present their ID, sign in, and receive a visitor's badge. This provides a more secure entrance to our facility. The lobby entrance used in previous years will no longer be used except for special events.
Our Welcome Center will be the home of our attendance clerk, records clerk, and school nurse. If you need to sign your student in late to school, or sign your student out early, this is your destination!

Elementary Athletics
We are still looking for volunteer coaches for soccer and cross country, so if you are interested, please send an email to justin.leonard@jefferson.kyschools.us.
Middle School Athletics
Middle school volleyball and cross country kicked off this week and we are excited about the seasons. The size of the team is up from where it has been the past few years, so the future is looking bright. Everyone is working hard and looking forward to when competitions begin. We are still securing a tennis coach and will get more information once we get someone in place.
It is required for all students to have a sports physical and all required paperwork completed before they begin practice this year. There are several options for this. You can click the link below to access a pdf with all of the required forms and you can print them off. Please make sure you have all required forms completed and bring them to the first practice. JCPS is offering several free sports physical clinics. If you choose to participate in a JCPS sports clinic, you must fill out the attached forms and bring them with you to the clinic. Finally, if your student-athlete has previously been diagnosed with COVID-19, there is a required “return-to-play” form that has to be completed by a physician linked below.
If you are unsure of when your physical expired, please email middle school athletic director (matthew.davis@jefferson.kyschools.us) or high school athletic director Justin Leonard (justin.leonard@jefferson.kyschools.us) and we will look that up for you.

Student Support Center
Elementary School Counselor
2022-23 school year, here we come! I am so excited to see everyone in August. My goal is to be in classrooms more often this coming school year to provide more opportunities for social/emotional learning. Research shows a direct relationship between social/emotional developmental skills and overall achievement, success, and happiness. Together we are going to make the 2022-23 school year the best year yet!
Middle School Counselor
Welcome to the best school year ever! I am your new middle school counselor and I am beyond excited to meet and greet everyone as we begin a new journey together. My goal this year is to be accessible to all students by being in classrooms, pulling small groups, and working with community partners to provide resources and opportunities. Enjoy these last few weeks of summer and we will see each other soon.
High School Counselor
I can't wait to welcome all the high school students back into the building! While you enjoy the last moments of summer, I am adjusting schedules to ensure the best educational opportunities for everyone! Students have 10 school days to request schedule changes and I will be available in study halls the first two weeks so I am accessible to everyone.
Mental Health Practitioner
Our mental health practitioner, David Rutledge, returns to work on August 3rd. If you need any assistance in the meantime, please contact one of our counselors.
Connections
Family Resource/Youth Services Center
We are currently going through a restructuring of our Family Resource/Youth Services Center. In previous years, we have shared a FRYSC Coordinator with Central High School, but for 2022-23 we will be sharing with Brandeis Elementary. With that being said, we will be hiring a new FRYSC Coordinator in collaborating with Brandeis. Please stay tuned!
