Principal's Message

Dear Brown School Family,

Homecoming 2023 filled my bucket! It was such a wonderful time - spirit days each day, pep rally, Homecoming Court, basketball games, concession stand, HoCo Dance, and alumni events! It finally feels like we are "back to normal." So many hands made this day special. Thank you to everyone who helped make memories for our students!

There is no Bear Essentials next week due to the short week!

Love,

Dr. Angela

PTA Founders Day - February 17th

Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst founded the PTA organization when women did not have the right to vote and social activism was not popular. However, they believed mothers would support their mission to eliminate threats that endangered children, and in early 1897, they started a nationwide campaign.

On Feb., 17, 1897, over 2,000 people—mostly mothers, but also fathers, teachers, laborers and legislators—attended the first convocation of the National Congress of Mothers in Washington, D.C. Twenty years later, 37 chartered state congresses existed.

In 1970, the National Congress of Parents and Teachers (National PTA) and the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers (NCCPT)—founded by Selena Sloan Butler in Atlanta, Ga.—merged to serve all children.

As the largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the nation, National PTA is the conscience of the country for children and youth issues. Through advocacy, as well as family and community education, National PTA has established programs and called for legislation that improves our children’s lives, such as:

Congratulations to National PTA for 126 years!

The rest of this month is dedicated to self love in the middle school world.  I've been talking about tips and strategies to self acceptance in my weekly PSA's and went into 8th grade classrooms on Monday to help students write a love letter to themselves:). I will visit 7th and 6th grade classrooms soon.  The grading period is wrapping up quickly and I am empowering your young ones to speak up to their teachers to receive the support that they need.  Finally, we have received more information about the BESS mental health screener from the district and will be reaching out in the next few months with updates and action plans.

It's been quite the busy week this past week, and I'm hopeful everyone was able to participate in a homecoming activity! Here in the Student Support Center we have been focused on the BESS mental health screener for our 6-12th grade students. Cordia and Robin have included some information about the screener in their columns in the last several weeks. Related to mental health screeners, if you have a concern about your child's mental/emotional health please feel free to reach out to me or their respective counselor. We also have a referral that is available to students and parents to fill out to give us a little more information. If you need access to any supports beyond school please feel free to email me or call me in my office and I will be happy to connect you to the appropriate resource!
