Principal's Message

Dear Brown School Family,

With Halloween fast approaching, many students will want to wear costumes on October 31st to school. Please keep in mind our Student Dress Policy to ensure that the costume meets the guidelines for regular school attire. Please avoid toy weapons, masks, excessive fake blood, gore, and full face paint. Avoid any costumes that may attempt to represent a group or population of people/culture, marginalize a group or culture, or focus on stereotypes. Also, avoid costumes that are really scary, because we do have very young students in our building. If you have any questions about the appropriateness of a costume, please ask an administrator or counselor!

This Saturday will be spent meeting prospective families at the Showcase of Schools. If you have family and friends wishing to apply for admission to Brown for the 2023-24 school year, the window to submit an application through JCPS is opening soon. All applicants must make Brown their first choice on the magnet school portion of the application in order to be considered. (Brown does not review 2nd choice applications for elementary and middle school, but sometimes may review 2nd choice applications for high school.) Additionally, siblings are not given preference during the admissions process. Please visit our Admissions Page to learn about the process and our school.

Love,

Dr. Angela

Technology Spotlight

Mike Moreland's Makerspace Class

Our Brown Bears are creating all kinds of new things with technology. This week we are spotlighting Mr. Mike's Junior and Senior Makerspace class.

These students use the Ursa Innovation Lab at least once a week. They have used the 3D printers, the Cricut machines and this week they are using the Glowforge laser cutter to make their own rulers. They designed their rules in Inkscape to create their SVG file then they customize is in the Glowforge app to have the machine recognize what needs to be engraved or cut. Check out some of the images of their awesome project.

Student Support Team

Elementary Counselor

Christy Teague - Click to EMAIL

October is Bully Prevention Month that goes along with Miss Christy's CCC (Core Counseling Curriculum) monthly Lesson, titled "Our Words have Power!" that shares the importance of thinking before speaking by using kind words instead of mean words to each other.

Also, we will be giving students in grades 3-5 the NNAT3 (Nagliere Nonverbal Abilities Test) on the morning of October 19, 2022. All students in grades 3-5 will take this test unless the student is already identified as Gifted/Talent in the General Intellectual Ability category.

Check out Miss Christy's Virtual Office for more information about our elementary world.

Middle School Counselor

Cordia Pickerill - Click to EMAIL

Please excuse my delay! I have just a few reminders:

  • If you haven't already and are interested, use this link to sign your child up to take the Gifted and Talented Screener. The test will be given next Wednesday!

  • VERY IMPORTANT: This information is for ALL grade levels. If you want your child to attend virtual therapy appointments at school, the therapist MUST be on our district MOA list. If they are not on the MOA list, then you will need to schedule their appointments outside of school hours. This is a liability issue. To find out if your child's therapist is on the list, and to help us make sure your child has the proper space and supervision while they are having their appointment, complete the Student Support Request Form and check the box for approval of outside services. If this is all totally confusing to you, go ahead and complete the student support request form as well and we'll clear things up.

JUNIORS AND SENIORS-KHEAA Steve will be at school in room 310A Monday 10/17 during B1 and Tuesday 10/18 during G1, G2, and G3. If you have an extenuating circumstance regarding the FAFSA, have your student see or email Norah.Wakefield@jefferson.kyschools.us to set up an appointment.

Students taking AP classes will bring home a physical piece of paper for a signature from their supportive adult about testing in May. Students need to choose whether or not they will take an AP test, verify with their supportive adult that they are testing, AND go online to THEIR myap.collegeboard.org account to officially declare their decision. Failure to register online by 10/21/22 will mean a test will not be ordered. If this is their first AP class, they need to create an account. If they cannot get logged in to their existing account, THE STUDENT has to call the College Board. Students can contact their AP teacher or study hall teacher if they need help registering. Students taking exams will be directed to MySchoolBucks to make a payment. Payments vary depending on the tests selected to be taken.

DUAL CREDIT sign ups for Spring 2023 are starting. Information will be posted to Google Classroom Class of 20## for sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

As some of you may have heard from seniors in your family, Brown now has a small Wellness room that is available to students who are in need of a space to calm down during the day. This room is in the Student Support Center off of the pedway, and is available to all students on an individual basis. We have several sensory and anxiety reducing items (i.e. a weighted lap toy, fidgets, seating space) available for use by students who are in need of a space to sit down and reduce their anxiety/strong feelings. We have several other things that are on the way that will be added to the room in the future that we hope to update in the near future. For now, if a student needs to use the room they are able to request to use the space from their teachers, who will then call the Student Support Center to let us know they are on their way up. The intent for this space is just to be used for a short period of time to get feelings under control, and allow our students a quiet space to center themselves and de-escalate on an individual basis. If you have any questions about this space please feel free to reach out to me.
