Principal's Message

Dear Brown School Family,

I love it when elementary report cards are due! One of my favorite tasks is reading each student's report card and then writing a note about the great things I see. I hope your elementary student enjoys reading their note. Middle and high school students are receiving report cards this week as well.

All Kentucky schools are required to practice emergency drills during the first month of school and during the first month back from winter break. We are wrapping up our drills this week and next.

Love,

Dr. Angela

This Week's Essentials

Welcome to our new Academic Instructional Coach

Hello!

My name is Cameel Clough and I am so delighted to be a part of the Brown School Family!

I have experiences at middle school, high school, and the collegiate level and am eager to learn more about elementary education. I have spent the past 12 years at TJ Middle in various roles- Instructional Coach, Backpack Lead, ELA Department Chair, G/T Lead, 8th grade ELA teacher, and a Racial Equity Committee Member.

I have taught 11th grade AP English as well as 9th grade English at Hopkinsville High School, served as senior teacher, English Department Chair and 9th grade Supervisor in Kingston, Jamaica and have also taught English Composition at the University College of the Caribbean.

I enjoy track and field, soccer and traveling.

I truly believe in the transformational power of a solid education and its ability to change lives.

New Visitation Policy

Our SBDM Council approved a revised Visitation Policy, so please check it out! Some changes are highlighted below.

Policy Statement:

Faculty and staff at the J. Graham Brown School encourage parents and guardians to be involved in their child’s educational day. We respectfully request arrangements are made with the classroom teacher prior to the visit. This policy stipulates that all visitors to the school must conduct themselves so as not to interfere with the daily operation of the school program. Visitors should minimize interaction with students and staff during instruction and avoid distractions or disruptions to the educational process within the classroom. If the visit is deemed a distraction by the teacher, the visitor will be asked to end the observation. To maintain security for all students and to avoid conflict with scheduled events or the disruption of critical educational activities (such as testing), all parent visitation (excluding lunch visits) must be arranged in advance. Due to student privacy laws, visitors are not permitted to photograph/record students without permission from the classroom teacher or school administration except for public performances. Students are not permitted to receive any third-party deliveries (food, flowers, balloons, etc.) during the school day; all deliveries will be held in the main office until after school.

MEETINGS/APPOINTMENTS:

Visitors may enter the main doors or via the pedway Monday through Friday when school is in session for appointments with teachers and staff. Visitors must sign-in with the office staff and show a valid photo ID. Front desk staff will provide a visitor’s badge that must be worn for the duration of the visit. Please note that all visitors must be listed on the student’s school enrollment form; parents/guardians must provide written permission for visitors not listed on the school enrollment form. A teacher or staff member will be called to meet the parent in the office/lobby for the appointment, and after the meeting, the parent must sign-out at the front desk and return the visitor’s badge. Conferences should be requested in advance with the student's teacher and scheduled during unstructured time, either during the teacher’s planning period or outside of instructional hours. To minimize distractions, visitors are asked to avoid visiting other classrooms and to avoid bringing small children.

CAFETERIA VISITATION:

Visitors wishing to have lunch with students may do so daily without an appointment. Please enter the main doors, present a valid photo ID, sign in with front desk staff, and obtain a visitor’s badge. Please note that all visitors must be listed on the student’s school enrollment form; parents/guardians must provide written permission for visitors not listed on the school enrollment form. The visitor may report directly to the cafeteria to meet the student. After the lunch period, visitors will not be permitted to accompany the child(ren) back to their classroom. Visitors must sign out at the front desk and return the visitor’s badge before leaving.

PARENT OBSERVATIONS OF CLASSROOMS:

Observers should submit a Classroom Observation Request form at least forty-eight (48) hours in advance to the main office. The classroom visit will be approved or denied by school administration. If approved, the visit will be coordinated with the classroom teacher. If the observation request is denied, an explanation will be given on the Classroom Observation Request form and returned to the parent. Visitors must sign in at the front desk and present a valid photo ID. Front desk staff will provide a visitor’s badge and notify the teacher. Please note that all visitors must be listed on the student’s school enrollment form; parents/guardians must provide written permission for visitors not listed on the school enrollment form. The class observation shall be limited to sixty (60) minutes. During the school year, an individual shall be limited to two (2) classroom observations. Additional visitation requests may be approved by the administration at his/her discretion. The administration shall have the authority to deviate from the above guidelines to allow more frequent visits or to restrict visits at any time he/she determines the change to be in the best interest of the student(s), parent, teacher, or school community.

VOLUNTEERING IN CLASSROOM, SCHOOL, AND ON FIELD TRIPS:

Individuals wishing to participate on field trips or work with students on activities that require one-on-one or small group involvement must have a State of Kentucky Volunteer Criminal Records Check approval on file in the office prior to participation. Please note that all visitors must be listed on the student’s school enrollment form; parents/guardians must provide written permission for visitors not listed on the school enrollment form. Parents and guardians wishing to participate in field trips or other activities such as parties will not be permitted to bring siblings or other children who are not Brown School students to those activities unless prior authorization and approval has been granted from the classroom teacher and an administrator. Parents serving in the capacity of field trip chaperones will not be permitted to bring other children.

JCPS EMPLOYEES VISITING OR VOLUNTEERING AS PARENTS:

When JCPS employees are visiting in the capacity of a parent, all visitor guidelines must be followed.

BROWN SCHOOL EMPLOYEES WHO ARE BROWN SCHOOL PARENTS/FAMILY MEMBERS:

Brown School employees who have children at our school must follow this policy when interacting with their child during the school day. Brown School employees must also follow this policy (i.e., setting up an appointment in advance) when needing to discuss their student with other faculty and staff members.

Technology Spotlight: Paper Tutoring

Has your child ever asked you, "Can you help me with my homework?" However, you are not sure how to help them. JCPS is now offering 24/7 free and unlimited tutoring support for students in grades 6-12. Students can access Paper by logging into their JCPS Clever account and clicking on the Paper Icon to launch the tutoring program. All of the student's current classes will show on their dashboard and they can click "Ask a Tutor" to receive immediate chat assistance with their subject assignments. Paper will not give them the answers but show them how to solve the problems. Students can also upload assignments to Paper and they will receive intentional feedback within 24 hours. Our Brown Staff recently attended a professional learning event hosted by Paper to show students how to login and use the program. We hope you find this new technology resource useful!

Imaged and linked below is a Parent's Guide showing how they can access it at home.
