Principal's Message

Dear Brown School family,

I hope your student's fall break was positive, relaxing, and productive. I was able to see one of my favorite paintings in person and check that off my bucket list. I am always amazed at the texture and depth of paintings when you see them in person versus looking at them in a book or on the Internet.

Monday, October 10th is Student Led Conference Day. Our day runs from 7:50 AM to 2:50 PM. Conferences that day may be held in person or virtually. Please make sure you have an appointment scheduled in advance because drop-in conferences will most likely not be available. If you are unable to participate that day with your student, your student will bring the conference materials home to conduct the conference with you later that week.

Love,

Dr. Angela

Technology Spotlight

1st Grade Empathy and Kindness PBL

Our Brown Bears are creating all kinds of new things with technology. This week we are spotlighting Mrs. Jennifer's and Mrs. Aruna's 1st Grade Classes.

Our 1st graders learned so much about empathy and showing kindness towards others recently. They capped off their learning experience by creating their own button in the Ursa Innovation Lab! They had a blast designing their button template and utilizing the hands-on capability of the button maker.

Volleyball varsity lost in a heartbreaking close match to Westport Middle in two close games. The team had a great season and showed massive improvement. They got a lot of great experience this year and will carry a lot of momentum into next year.

Cross-Country competed in the JCPS Middle School Championships at Moore on Tuesday night. In 6th grade girls, Sara Rogers won the 5th place medal and Tristen Wick won 10th place in the boys race. In the 8th grade race Oliver Zausch won 5th and Ethan Wright was 11th place. In the 8th grade girls race, Lucy O'Brien placed 11th and Erin Wright placed 12th. We have a great foundation for the future.

Tennis won matches against Ramsey and Highland over the past week. The team is doing fast-feed Mondays at the indoor courts about Village 8 theaters at 5:30. Any student wanting to play tennis is welcome to join. This will be continuing through the fall and winter. Please email Matt Davis for more information. The season continues Thursday vs. Highland at Peterson Park on Thursday at 6pm.

I hope you all had a great fall break! It's great to get some time to rest and get away from responsibilities. As we move further into the fall season, we move more into a time of testing for our high school students. Testing anxiety is very common, and can feel almost crippling to some. If your student is struggling with some testing anxiety as they prepare to take a test (whether it's the ACT, PSAT, or just a test in class) here are a few coping skills we can try:

  1. Try doing some deep breathing. This helps to regulate our heart rate, and decrease anxiety.

  2. Another coping skill that can be easily tied in with deep breathing is called grounding. This is a technique where we take stock of all of our senses to ground ourselves in the moment.

  3. Taking it a step further, it is often helpful to have a "happy place" that we can visit in our minds when we are frustrated or anxious. This is usually a happy or fun memory that we are able to explore with our memory of our senses in that moment. Personally I like to close my eyes, bring up my memory, and then slowly go through the 5 senses placing myself as fully in that moment as possible.

  4. Sometimes our anxiety does end up getting the better of us. If you get to a moment where you feel like you cannot get yourself to a better place it is always ok to ask for help. Feel free to use the student support form to request help from the Student Support Team.
