We started by revisiting how fear and bias are natural stress responses, and how awareness of this can help us respond more empathetically to challenging behaviours.
We were introduced to Social Emotional Learning (SEL), a framework that supports students’ emotional development across the curriculum. Through storytelling, video analysis, and small-group work, we explored the five SEL competencies:
Self-awareness
Self-management
Social awareness
Relationship skills
Responsible decision-making
A visual exercise using the Feelings Wheel helped us expand our emotional vocabulary and guide students in identifying their emotions.
Role-play scenarios allowed us to explore the roles of bully, victim, bystander, and upstander in real-life contexts. We used a Behaviour Map to identify emotional triggers and student responses.
We also worked with powerful SEL resources such as:
Think Equal: for early childhood values education
Positive Action: promoting positive behaviour
Edutopia - SEL Strategies
Videos used included Leslee Udwin’s TED Talk on teaching values, and a short documentary on empathy.
