At Hylands Primary School, reading is at the heart of everything we do. We aim to develop pupils' reading through sharing stories, progressive phonics teaching, individual reading, whole-class guided reading and an engaging, well-resourced library. Our aim, to foster an interest in words and their meanings, is embedded fully in our class and school environment. We aim to foster a love of books and gain an appreciation of books from a variety of genres. We aim for every child across the school to have a high quality text read to them everyday.
Reading in our School and Class Environment
At Hylands Primary School, a commitment to fostering a love of reading is evident from the moment you enter the building. Books are central to our school’s ethos and are prominently displayed throughout the environment. Shared corridor spaces feature promotions of new publications and highlight an “Author of the Month,” alongside classic texts recommended for various age groups. Within classrooms, inviting and well-organised reading areas offer a diverse range of age-appropriate texts, carefully categorised by genre to help pupils explore books that align with their interests. Front-facing displays of selected books, including recent publications, are regularly updated to capture students' attention.
Promoting Reading for Pleasure at Hylands Primary
At Hylands Primary School we believe that reading should be a fundamental part of childhood and a skill which should be developed to support lifelong learning. Our aim is to develop and embed a strong, sustainable reading culture within the school community. Confident and competent readers will foster a love of reading through a rich and varied experience of texts, in which they are empowered to exercise freedoms of choice and independence. Inspiring children to read is their fundamental right. It underpins all learning and secures a good trajectory for personal development and an understanding of the world in which they live.

At Hylands Primary School we want to inspire our young children to become enthusiastic, confident and competent comprehenders of language. Children are given the opportunity to listen to and study 'whole texts' in order to discuss themes, character and plot development as well as begin to make links between other texts and authors. We have developed the Hylands Primary School Reading Journey which maps out the core texts each year group will read and study in class. Age-appropriate novels and picture books have been carefully selected in order to cover a range of text types across a school year (archaic language, non-linear plot etc) as well as ensuring equality and diversity in content and, where appropriate, providing direct links and enrichment to our creative curriculum.
At Hylands Primary School, the Reading Champions, comprising of Year 6 reading ambassadors, play a vital role in supporting and promoting our numerous reading for pleasure initiatives across the school and the maintenance of our extensive school library.
These ambassadors actively engage in shared story sessions with children in the Early Years, fostering a love of storytelling from an early age, as well as assisting pupils across the school by recommending books tailored to individual interests, helping to spark a passion for reading.
Importantly, they serve as reading buddies for targeted children in Years 2 and 3, regularly listening to them read and offering guidance to help them build confidence and become fluent, proficient readers.
