At Hylands Primary, we are committed to fostering a love of reading every day. In addition to our daily reading activities, we actively participate in national events that celebrate literature and storytelling. Throughout the school year, we take part in National Poetry Day, World Book Day, National Storytelling Week, and World Poetry Day, providing our pupils with enriching experiences that inspire a lifelong passion for reading.
World Book Day is one of the biggest and most exciting events in our school calendar! While we love dressing up as our favourite book characters, the main focus of the day is celebrating the joy of reading.
Throughout the day, pupils take part in a variety of activities, including book-tasting, book-swapping, and storytelling sessions in every class. Mystery readers visit classrooms to share their love of reading, and pupils enjoy virtual author visits. Additionally, children from Year 2 to Year 6 visit our local Waterstones store to use their World Book Day book vouchers. It is always a fun-filled and inspiring day for everyone!
Every child goes home with a new book on World Book Day chosen from our whole-school book swap
Each class visits our book-tasting cafe where they 'sample' different genres of books for their age group
Every year group visits our school library for a shared story session led a different member of staff in the school
Each class from Y2-Y6 visits our local Waterstones store to spend their WBD voucher & browse new books for their class reading area wishlist
We dress up as our favourite book characters every other year at Hylands Primary.
Lots of parents & relatives appear in their children's classrooms as a mystery reader to share a story with the class
Some of our favourite entries in our World Book Day craft competition: creating a favourite book character from a toilet roll!
Every child at Hylands Primary School has a high-quality text read to them every day. During National Storytelling Week these reading opportunities increase further with DEAR activities (drop everything and read), author visits and mystery readers appearing in every class.
Some of our Reception children had initiated their own story-time session
Poetry is celebrated across the school on National Poetry Day which falls at the beginning of October every year. From rhyming stories in EYFS up to narrative poems and verse novels in Year 6, every type of poetry is explored and celebrated. Pupils take part in virtual live lessons hosted by real poets where they get the opportunity to create their own poetry as well as participating in whole-class performance poetry.
