At Hylands we believe that all children should have the opportunity to develop a love of learning and a love of life itself by giving them a rich and varied curriculum. We enable our children to grow into thoughtful, caring and active citizens in school and the wider community. Our curriculum gives children the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the school and local community. We nurture independence and a growth mindset in order for our children to learn.
We follow the Havering Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2022-2027. R.E. is a statutory part of the curriculum; parents/carers have the right to withdraw their child from religious assemblies. Requests regarding such withdrawals should be given in writing to the Headteacher.
Our SMSC/FBV curriculum gives children the opportunity to:
Spiritual - Explore beliefs, experience and faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity and reflect on experiences.
Moral - Recognise right and wrong and respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues and offer reasoned views.
Social - Use a range of social skills to participate in the local community and beyond; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict.
Cultural - Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain’s parliamentary system; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.
Democracy - Be part of a system where everyone plays an equal part.
Rule of law - Learn that all people and institutions are subject to and accountable for their actions and behaviour.
Individual liberty - Be free to express views or ideas.
Well being: Learn to respect themselves and others, reflect and think mindfully about their learning, recognise that people have different strengths, build respectful friendships, develop self-esteem and confidence, work in a range of groups and settings.
Pupil Voice: Our pupils know that everyone is valued and that their thoughts, ideas and opinions count. They are able to make a positive contribution to the school and local community, take part in democratic activities across the curriculum, express their opinions on a range of different topics and issues, contribute to planning their own learning, take part in discussions and express their thoughts about their learning.
Enrichment: We aim to ensure that experiences, activities and opportunities inspire a love of learning for all by providing on and off-site topic related activities, offering opportunities for children to learn outdoors, developing partnerships with external providers that extend children’s opportunities for learning, holding specialist curriculum days or weeks, welcoming parents and carers to take part in children’s learning and experiences.
Rights Respecting School
At Hylands Primary School, we are proud to be a Rights Respecting School, where every child is empowered to reach their full potential. Our Core Values are deeply rooted in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)—a global commitment made in 1989 to protect and uphold the rights of every child.
With the support of UNICEF, we actively teach our pupils about these 42 fundamental rights, helping them understand their place in the wider world and the importance of respect, fairness, and responsibility.
Being a Rights Respecting School isn’t just a title—it’s a way of life at Hylands. Our pupils feel safe, valued, and inspired, knowing that their voices matter. We aim to nurture their talents, build their confidence, and help them grow into responsible, active citizens.
We are proud to have achieved the Bronze Award and are working towards our Silver Status, further embedding children's rights into our school's culture.
Classroom Charters: Every class creates a charter outlining their rights and how they can show respect for others.
Rights Ambassadors: Each class elects two Ambassadors who represent their peers, attend meetings, and help shape school decisions.
Daily Learning: Articles from the UNCRC are displayed and discussed in classrooms, making children more aware of their rights and responsibilities.
Pupil Voice: We actively involve students in decision-making, ensuring they help shape the future of their school.
At Hylands Primary, we are more than just a school—we are a community that champions respect, equality, and opportunity for every child.
