At Hylands Primary School, we follow the National Curriculum, enhanced by additional resources to enrich the learning experience for our pupils. We are committed to providing a balanced and comprehensive curriculum that enables every child to reach their full potential. Our aim is to offer a broad, well-rounded education, further enriched through educational visits, sports, the arts, and collaborative links with other schools and the wider community.
Our creative, topic-based curriculum spans both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 and is supported by the Cornerstones framework. Each topic is based on an exciting theme, with teachers guiding pupils in how to approach learning. The topics are designed to develop both knowledge and skills through innovative and creative methods. Our curriculum emphasises engaging knowledge acquisition, skills development, idea generation, and the expression of individual thoughts and opinions.

In Early Years and the beginning of Key Stage 1, we follow the Jolly Phonics curriculum for phonics instruction. Learners are formally assessed through the Year 1 phonics screening test.
English reading and writing are taught as standalone subjects, though skills are occasionally integrated into Cornerstones topics to complement the themes.
Mathematics is also taught as a standalone subject, ensuring pupils thoroughly understand the skills required by the National Curriculum. These skills are then applied throughout the broader curriculum. Our in-house Aspire Maths system empowers pupils to take ownership of their learning by reflecting on their progress and making choices to enhance their skills.
We also have access to a range of digital learning platforms, including Learning Village, TT Rockstars, and First News. Pupils have daily access to iPads and Google Chromebooks, supporting and enhancing their learning experiences.
We are dedicated to embedding the core British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance for those with different faiths, beliefs, and backgrounds throughout our curriculum.
