Stress: is the response of the body to the demands of
daily living
Stressor: is a source or cause of stress
General Adaptation Syndrome: is a series of body
changes that result from stress
(GAS) Three Stages:
1. Alarm Stage: Body gets ready for a quick action, during
this stage adrenaline: a hormone that prepares the body to
react during times of stress or emergency is excreted into
the bloodstream.
Your heart rate and blood pressure increase
Digestion Slows
Muscles contract
Breathing and sweating increase
Mental Activity increases
Pupils Dilate
Stage called the fight or flight stage
2. Resistance Stage: Body attempts to regain internal
balance
Pupils constrict
Saliva increases
Heart Rate decreases
Blood Pressure Decreases
Blood flow to muscles decreases
Muscles Relax
First two stages are healthy
Exhaustion Stage: wear and tear on the body increases
the risk of injury, illness and premature death
People who have difficulty dealing with stress
Stress Management Skills: techniques to deal and manage
stressful situations
1. Use Responsible decision making skills
2. Keep a time management plan
3. Keep a budget
4. Talk with responsible adults
5. Have a support network of friends
How to protect yourself during stressful situations:
1. Participate in physical activity
2. Write in a journal
3. Use Breathing techniques
4. Eat a healthful diet
5. Get plenty of rest and sleep
