mouth
Tobacco- Plant that contains nicotine
Cigarette- dried and shredded tobacco wrapped in paper
Clove Cigarette- cigarette that has a mixture of cloves
and tobacco. This contains higher amounts of tar,
nicotine and carbon monoxide
Eugenol- chemical that numbs the back of the throat and
reduces the ability to cough this chemical is found in clove
cigarettes
Chewing tobacco- is made from chopped tobacco leaves
Snuff- is made from powdered tobacco leaves and stems
Nicotine is as addictive as heroin, cocaine, and alcohol
Nicotine Withdrawal:

4. Restless
5. Headaches
6. Difficulty Concentrating
7. Frustrated and angry
8. Heart Palpitations
9. Increased Appetite
How Tobacco Smoke harms health (Hand Out of
Chemicals)
1. 4,000 different chemicals
2. Carcinogen- a chemical known to cause cancer, most are
found in tar
2
3. Tar- a sticky, thick fluid that is formed when tobacco is
burned, it irritates respiratory tissues and is a major
cause of lung cancer
4. Carbon Monoxide- odorless, tasteless gas, it interferes
with the ability to carry oxygen
Smoking Causes Cancer
1. Lung Cancer- Kills more people than any other cancer
2. It is rare for someone who never smoked to develop lung
cancer
3. Most die within five years
4. Throat Cancer
5. Mouth Cancer
6. Esophagus Cancer
7. Pancreas Cancer
8. Bladder Cancer
9. 1/3 of all Cancer deaths are related to smoking
10. 9/10 lung cancer cases are due to smoking
Asthma- Smoking can make it worse
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: interferes with
breathing
1. Chronic Bronchitis: recurring inflammation of the
bronchial tubes that causes mucous to line the tubes.
Must cough to remove matter, but all cannot be removed,
causing lung infection and the ability to breathe
2. Emphysema: condition in which the alveoli lose most of
their ability to function.
a. The lungs lose the ability to properly inflate and
hold air
b. Difficult for oxygen to be absorbed in the
bloodstream
c. Carbon Dioxide builds up in the body because it
cannot be removed
d. Increasingly difficult to remain active
3
e. Some must remain in bed and use special equipment
to get oxygen
f. It cannot be cured
Smoking causes Cardiovascular disease:
1. Major cause of heart and blood vessel disease, blood
clots, and stroke
2. Speeds up the fat deposits on artery walls
3. Damages the inner lining of arteries
4. Reduced space causes blood clots to form
5. Heart Attack can occur
6. Aortic Aneurysm: Bulging of the aorta, main artery of
the body. Aneurysm is the weakening of the artery wall
7. Nicotine raises heart Rate 20 beats per minute
Secondhand Smoke:
1. Exhaled smoke
2. Most hazardous form of indoor air pollution
3. Causes
a. Heart Disease
b. Respiratory Problems
c. Ear Infection
d. Children’s lungs may not develop properly
e. Causes eyes to burn
f. Irritates nose, throat, and airways
g. Headaches
Smokeless Tobacco:
1. Causes nicotine dependence
2. Contain Carcinogens
3. Increases risk of developing cancer
4. Leukoplakia- abnormal cells in the mouth that appear as
white patches of tissue. These cells can develop into
cancer
5. Increases risk of larynx, pharynx, and esophagus cancer
6. Causes problems with the teeth and gums
4
7. Permanently stains teeth
8. Causes bad breath
9. Scratches and wears away teeth
10. Tooth Decay
11. Exposes roots
12. Teeth fall out
13. Dull senses to taste
