System
Nervous System: carries messages to and from the brain
and spinal cord to all parts of the body
Two Parts:
1) Central Nervous System: Consists of Brain and Spinal
cord
2) Peripheral Nervous System: Consists of nerves that
branch out from the central nervous system to the muscles,
skin, internal organs and glands
Brain: mass of nerve tissue that acts as the control center of
the body
Cerebrum: Largest part of brain, controls: ability to
memorize, think, and learn
Cerebellum: Controls and coordinates muscle activity
Brain Stem: Controls functions of internal organs
Spinal Cord: thick column of nerve cells that extend from
the brain through the spinal column
Seven Cervical Vertebrae: Supplies back of head, neck,
shoulders, arms, hands, and diaphragm
Twelve Thoracic Vertebrae: Supplies chest and parts of
abdomen
Five Lumbar Vertebrae: Lower back, parts of thighs and
legs.
Sacrum/Coccyx: Supplies buttocks, legs, feet, genital area
Nerve Cells:
1. Neuron: nerve cell that is the functional unit of the nervous
system
2. Sensory Neurons: carry impulses from the sense organs to
the spinal cord and brain
3. Motor Neurons: carry responding impulses to muscles and
glands from the brain and spinal cord. They tell muscles and
glands what to do.
4. Reflex Action: involuntary action in which a message is
sent to the spinal cord, is interpreted, and is responded to
immediately.
Keep Your Nervous System Healthy
1. Wear protective helmet for sports
2. Do not dive into shallow water
3. Use Seat Belt
4. Follow directions for medications
5. Avoid alcohol and drugs
6. Follow directions for household products
