You can evaluate food labels
- Food label: is a panel of nutrition information required on all processed foods regulated by the Food and Drug administration
- Food label must contain:
- 1. Name of Food
- 2. Net amount in weight or volume
- 3. Name and address of manufacturer
- 4. Ingredients
- 5. Nutrient Content
- Nutrition Facts: is the title of the information panel
- Serving Size: is the listing of the amount of food that is considered a serving
- Food Additives: Substances added to a food to produce a desired effect(Keep food safe longer, boost nutrient content, improve taste, texture or appearance)
- Nutritional Claims:
- 1. Free- The food contains none, or an insignificant amount( Fat, trans fat, sodium
- 2. Low- (Fat Less than three grams of fat per serving
- 3. Light- One-third fewer calories, one half the fat or one half the sodium of the original product
- 4. Reduced- the food contains 25 percent fewer calories, or 25% less of a certain nutrient than the original version
- 5. High- the food provides at least 20 percent of the daily recommended value for a vitamin, mineral, protein, or fiber
- 6. Good Source Of- Food provides 10% to 19% of the daily value
- 7. Healthy- Must be low in fat and saturated fat and contain low sodium. They must also provide 10 percent of daily value.
- Open Dating- Determine how long a food remains fresh
- Sell by dates
- Use by or expiration dates
- Freshness dates
- Pack dates
