Sexually Transmitted Disease
- Disease caused by pathogens that are transmitted from an infected person to an uninfected person during intimate sexual content
- Chlamydia:
- Caused by bacteria that produces inflammation of the reproductive organs
- Most Common STD in the United States
- Spread by intimate sexual contact with an infected partner
- A pregnant female may pass the infection to her baby during delivery, can enter the eyes or lungs( blindness or pneumonia can occur)
- Symptoms: Males: painful urination, discharge from the penis, and inflammation of the urethra, pain or swelling in the scrotum. These symptoms usually appear in one to three weeks after exposure, (Some Males never have symptoms but they still can infect a sexual partner
- Symptoms: Females: One-Half of females have zero symptoms. Inflammation of the vagina and cervix, burning sensation during urination, and an unusual discharge from the vagina.
- Treatment: Cotton swab to collect bacteria. Antibiotics are used to treat disease
- Complications: Pelvic inflammatory Disease: serious infection of the internal reproductive organs. Can cause scarring of the fallopian tubes thus causing sterility. It also can cause sterility in males
Genital Herpes
- STD caused by herpes simplex virus that produces cold sores or fever blisters in the genital area or mouth
- Type I causes blisters in the mouth or on the lips
- Type II causes genital sores but may also cause sores in the mouth
- Spread by intimate sexual contact
- Infected people are extremely contagious when blisters break and form red , painful sores
- Symptoms: itching or burning sensation, clusters of blisters in the genital area. Symptoms may last for one or two weeks then disappear
- There is no known cure for genital herpes
- Some drugs can relieve symptoms
- Increases risk of HIV because of open sores
- An infected female can infect her baby during delivery
Genital Warts
- Caused by human papilloma virus that produces wart like growth on the genitals
- Spread by intimate sexual contact
- Symptoms: soft,red,or pink resemble a cauliflower. Usually occur on the tip of the penis, they also may be found on the shaft of the penis, scrotum, or in the anus
- In females they may appear on the vulva, labia, inside the vagina, on the cervix, or inside the anus
- Once infected the virus is always present in the body
- Genital warts may be frozen and removed by using liquid nitrogen, but they may reappear
- Increase risks of cancer(Cervical, anus and penis)
