Welcome to Clapton Park. Come and find out what we do in our centre!
Early maths is promoted in our setting incidentally throughout our daily routine and explicitly during group sessions. This is to encourage our children to actively develop their maths skills and to feel confident when applying them to their everyday life. Promoting early maths also allows children to learn through play and to explore maths in their environment.
During our maths group sessions which we start from rising 3's to preschool, children learn to recognise and talk about numbers in their environment, practise counting in real life situations and through stories, understand and recognise shapes, measure and begin to draw and form numbers.
We feel that our groups sessions are less structured which engages children and welcomes their inquisitive minds. Other curricular links are often referred to such as literacy, physical development, communication and language and expressive arts and design.
Within the other rooms (below 3 years old) early maths is taught during free-flow, Boogie Mites, ‘What’s in The Box’ sessions, meal times and general interactions with our children. In 2022, we were also one of the selected Early Years settings to take part in the Maths Champion II Trial run by NDNA (National Day Nurseries Association) in order to support our pre-school children's development in Maths.
