Welcome to Clapton Park. Come and find out what we do in our centre!
Write Dance is a structured music and movement programme designed to assist children in the transition from gross motor movements to the fine motor control required for writing. It is an integral part of our curriculum that uses rhythmic patterns and music to help children develop the physical strength, coordination and confidence needed to form letters and shapes. By engaging in these sessions, children build the foundational skills that will support their literacy development throughout their educational journey.
The programme focuses on helping children understand the relationship between their bodies and the marks they make on a page. Through a series of choreographed movements, children learn to use their arms, hands and fingers in a fluid and controlled manner. These exercises are designed to improve core stability, hand-eye coordination and bilateral integration, all of which are essential components for a successful transition to formal writing in a school environment.
During these sessions, the Key Person observes each child’s progress, noting their ability to follow rhythms, cross the midline and replicate specific patterns. These observations are carefully documented to ensure that the child's physical development is accurately reflected in their learning journey. This process allows us to identify a child's strengths and determine the specific areas where they may need further encouragement as they move towards more complex mark-making.
The progress made during Write Dance sessions is a key feature of the child's transition to their next setting. The achievements and milestones reached in these sessions are detailed in the Transition Report, providing the new setting with a clear understanding of the child's physical readiness for writing. This ensures that the adults in your child's new room continue to build upon the solid foundation established during their time at our nursery.
