Welcome to Clapton Park. Come and find out what we do in our centre!
At our nursery, we believe that fostering an environment of belonging and respect is a vital part of every child’s journey. That’s why we are so committed to our Anti-Racism Practice, an intentional and joyful approach to celebrating the beautiful diversity of our world. This practice is woven into the very fabric of our daily life, designed to ensure that every child sees themselves reflected in our setting while learning to value and embrace the unique identities of others.
Our anti-racism routine is a wonderful exercise in building empathy and global awareness. From the books we read to the resources we play with, we ensure that a wide range of cultures, skin tones and backgrounds are represented with dignity and joy. This consistent exposure helps even our youngest learners develop a window into the lives of others and a mirror for their own experiences, teaching them the value of kindness and the importance of standing up for fairness from the very beginning.
The heart of this practice lies in representation and empowerment. We carefully curate our environment from our room resources to our group session activities to include diverse imagery and global perspectives. Whether a child is playing with dolls that reflect various ethnicities or exploring instruments from across the globe, these moments give every child a sense of agency and pride in their own heritage as they see their culture celebrated as an essential part of our nursery's story.
Once a theme or conversation is introduced, the magic of collective understanding begins. As we talk about our families, our traditions and the things that make us special, the children practice vital social-emotional skills, learning to celebrate differences rather than just noticing them. By using age-appropriate language to discuss fairness and inclusion, we turn everyday play into a hands-on lesson in social justice, helping children understand that our nursery is a safe space where everyone belongs.
Beyond the classroom activities, our anti-racism practice is a powerful tool for developing strong social bonds and a sense of justice. The children learn to appreciate the marvellous variety of the human family and participate enthusiastically in activities that honor different cultural festivals and languages. It creates a supportive community where every child’s identity is valued, helping them build the self-esteem and confidence needed to navigate a diverse world with an open heart and a curious mind.
