Weekly Update 2023-2024

Be Kind    *    Be Respectful    *    Be Your Personal Best

8-25-2023

We are off and running!  I would like to thank the PTA and all of the parents who came and helped with schedule pick-up and locker set-up last week.  We couldn't have done it without you!  It takes quite a team to get the train moving down the tracks, and you were an integral part of that effort and team. Truly, you are amazing and appreciated!

We have TWO big events this weekend! I look forward to seeing many of you at both!

Wow!  What an awesome start to our school year!  The last three days have felt the most "normal" since before the pandemic, and that's even with the untimely heatwave! I am so impressed with our students and staff getting back into the routine of school, focusing on our guidelines of being kind, being respectful, and being their personal best. Our students are truly stepping up and showing their best selves and it is wonderful to witness!

We are pleased to introduce you to a positive approach to classroom management and discipline program that our school and district adopted this year!  The approach we are using with our students is called CHAMPS: A Proactive and Positive Approach to Classroom Management.  Within this approach, the focus is on prevention and on teaching expectations to all students in common key areas of our schools, which are the Bus, the Hallways, the Media Center, the Bathrooms, the Lunch Room, and during Recess.  Each grade level has been taught how to behave responsibly in each of these places, using the CHAMPS model.

As you can see above, CHAMPS stands for:  Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, and Participation.  When students follow the CHAMPS expectations, it leads to Success!  We encourage you to ask your student(s) what they learned about CHAMPS during the first few days of school.  You can ask your student when and how students are allowed to talk, get help, get out of their seats, and how to actively participate in various key places in our school and in their classes.

In addition, we are using different Voice Levels with the CHAMPS approach.  The students should all know about how and when they should change the volume of their voices, to be appropriate with the activity they are doing.  The Voice Levels range from 0=QUIET/NO TALKING, 1=Whisper, 2=Quiet Conversational Voice, 3=Presentational Voice, to 4=Outside Voice

You can even use the CHAMPS approach AT HOME!  Think about what would CHAMPS look like when eating dinner as a family?  What about when in the car for a road trip? What about when going to visit a friend or family member?  It's all about laying out the expectations so students know exactly what they should be doing! Give it a try!

Parent/Guardian/Student Handbook - Each year we ask all students and parents in the district to review the contents and expectations of the student/parent handbook, which is linked here - Parent/Guardian-Student Handbook 2023-2024After reviewing the handbook with your child, please sign the electronic form as soon as possible - Parent Handbook Sign Off 2023-2024.

GMS Picture Day is NEXT WEEK on Thursday, August 31st - 📸 + 😁.  We are excited to let you know we have moved to a new picture company, Pictures With Class - www.pictureswithclass.com. They come highly recommended and both HES and GMS will be using the same company!

Most sports are for students in 7th (JV) and 8th (Varsity) grades.  For some sports, we offer opportunities to the 6th graders. That depends on the interest at the 7th and 8th-grade levels.

IF you have a child who is planning on trying out for one of the seasons below next year, he/she

MUST have a current sports physical on file in the nurse's office.

PLEASE DO NOT WAIT.  A student cannot try out without a current physical on file.
