Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year!

For those of you who are new to Golf Middle School, this is my "August Update." Welcome to GMS!  Once school begins, I send a communication every Friday, called the Weekly Update, with information about events, reminders, dates, etc.  Although we are a couple of weeks away, I wanted to share a few reminders as we gear up for the start of school!  This update contains information about safety updates, orientations, schedules, lockers, PE uniforms, and more.

The GMS Period Schedule has been adjusted - NEW - GMS Bell Schedule. The major adjustment is that we shifted our advisory and WIN time to after lunch to help reset for the afternoon classes. The school start and end times are still the same with school beginning at 8:20 am and dismissing at 3:22 pm. 

STAY TUNED - You will be getting an important letter next week about student IDs and lanyards, electronic devices, dress code, schedules, the handbook, and more.

5th-grade orientation will be on Thursday, August 17th - This is ONLY for incoming 5th graders. This is intentional. These students will have time to acclimate to their schedule, lockers, and the building with their families and without any pressure from their middle school peers.

• I will meet with parents from 9:00-10:00 AM while the teachers take students in smaller groups.

• From 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM students AND parents will get to practice their locker combinations and walk through their schedules.

• ALL 5th-grade students then have the option to come back during the other times if necessary and/or to meet some of their peers.  See the Parent Letter - 5th Grade Orientation 2022 that was emailed on August 3rd for more information.

For Grades 6-8 (and any 5th graders), we have TWO times for schedule pick-up & locker set-up:

Thursday, August 17 - 4:30-6:00 PM

                                   OR

Friday, August 18 - 8:30-10:00 AM

Are you out of town during these orientation/set-up dates?  If so, you can come on Monday, August 21, 2023 (3:30-4:30 pm) to pick up your schedule and get your locker set up. NOTE: This is NOT an orientation. This is a time to pick up your child's schedule and help them get organized before school starts - self-guided.

Access to Infinite Campus - At GMS, student and parent access to Infinite Campus will be available on Friday, August 18th at noon, after the sessions for students to pick up their schedules and set up their lockers. For those of you who also have students at Hynes, you likely read that they are posting the class lists next week on Wednesday. The reason for the difference in when GMS opens its access to Infinite Campus is because the students at GMS have all of the teachers/classes in their grade at GMS. The main difference for students is in the order they have those teachers/classes. There is no homeroom like there is at Hynes where they are assigned to one teacher.  In addition, the scheduling process is A LOT more involved here than at Hynes. We have to roster all of the students in those individual classes, assign lockers (which have to be uploaded by D219), and then we have to check and double-check each student's schedule. 

Lockers - Students are each assigned an individual locker.  To help REMIND or PREPARE your student for opening a locker combination, here are two helpful videos:

6th Grade Physicals and Immunizations - As a reminder, it is a requirement for all incoming 6th graders to have their physical and immunizations for school. You are welcome to drop off your paperwork at the office 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. Physical Form For Doctor (6th grade, sports, new students)

**SPORTS PHYSICALS** - If your student going into 6th, 7th, or 8th grade is interested in playing a sport this year, they MUST have a sports physical on file (EVEN to TRY OUT).  See the "Sports Section" below for more information about the seasons. Physicals are usually good for one year and one day, so if your child is in sports, this is something that will need to happen every year base on the date of their last physical.

PE Uniforms AND Heartrate Monitor Straps - If you ordered a PE uniform and/or heart rate monitor strap during registration, your child will receive them from their PE teacher within the first couple of days of school. Don't worry about the size of the uniform that you ordered. The teachers always have kids try on the uniforms and can easily swap them out if necessary.

Lunch/Recess Supervisors needed!  We have lunch and recess supervision positions open at both Hynes and Golf for next school year. Please forward this information to anyone you know who may be interested.
